LCD and Plasma Bargains

I am a PC gamer, and have only ever consoled on LCDs (for obvious reasons :D). All I can say is that everyone on these forums who has gamed on a plasma loves it and says it's better than on LCD.

Obviously not saying LCD won't be better or that it is not great, but from a price point, I'm quite confident plasma will win in terms of quality.

That said, there have been relatively few people commenting on plasma gaming (because most hardcore gamers are worried about image burn-in, as I alluded to above).

From a logical point of view it would make sense that plasma would be better - especially because of the size, faster response time and wide viewing angle - as well as due to better blacks and colours at the same price point.

Image burn-in will be in the back of your mind if you play games for many hours with HUDs and few cut scenes/cinematics (which would otherwise "refresh" the plasma cells displaying the static HUD). After the plasma break-in phase, your chances these days of image burn-in are very low, especially if you use a lower light/brightness setting.

As you may have read, I've had the past three cricket test matches on for 10+ hours a day for 15 days, and the screen had a green/yellow opaque "info bar" running across the entire button horizontal of the screen. I had no image retention. ;)

I guess its not really the end of the world anyway, will keep my LCD in the lounge for gaming and smash the plasma in the bedroom where all the viewing happens :)

Probably best to avoid intense gaming on it.

People don't normally smash their plasma's until after a couple of years, but if you really want to ;-) take pics

ok just got back from Cats Digital where I oogled at my prospecive new TV

Very nice set I must say but the colours didn't seem to 'pop' as much as the LED?? and the LED's black's were BLACK whereas the Plasma's a bit grey do you think that this could be the contrast and brightness settings as well as colour etc??

Very impressed with the thickness though

Also then went to Makro which was showing SuperSport HD and I didn't notice the difference between the FHD's and the HD Ready's only thing I was a bit concerned about was that when I looked at the Blu-Ray DVD's most of them said on the back that the video was 1080p and only the special features were 720p. Am I just being pranoid???

What feeds were playing?

Which LED-backlit LCD was it, and what was the price?

You should play around with the plasma settings. Of course I have no idea what the settings were set to, but I use normal mode with some adjustments to cell light/brightness/contrast and it's just right for me. I sincerely doubt that similarly-priced LED-backlit LCD can achieve the blacks that the C430 can.

*tinfoil hat* They could have upped the brightness/contrast of the LED-backlit LCD to sell more of them, more profit in LED/LCD. :D

Yes you won't notice much of a difference between 720p on a 720p and 1080p set. What we've been talking about though is 1080p on a 720p set, which too is unnoticeable 99% of the time from viewing distance.

you are being paranoid. remember there are 2 factory settings. 1 - store mode - whereby the settings are boosted to make the tv look great instore (bright lighting, etc) 2 - home viewing - whereby the settings are a blank canvas as such.. Now, some stores select store viewing for a particular model in order to boost the sales of that model. The RR (rate of return) on LED tv's is higher than the equivalent size LCD or Plasma. WRT 720p and 1080, it is a debatable subject, dependant on viewing distance and screen size. I wouldn't stress.

They were aparently Blu-Ray but without HDMI cables or something to that effect - not too sure if there is a huge difference with or without using a HDMI cable

Uhh it was a Sony and the price tag had too many zeros!!

I'm looking into Screens. Why do I not see a Full HD Plasma in SA? Or am I looking in the wrong places? The ones I saw are HD Ready. Is burn-in still an issue with newer Plasma models? I've been reading a lot of contradictory statements from a couple of forums regarding IR and burn-ins.

Unfair comparison then. :)

We are not saying entry level plasmas will beat mid-high end LCD/LEDs. ;)

Samsung PS50C550 50" full HD plasma at around R11,000. Reported "jaggering" issues with panning shots though (reduced after calibration) so go to the store to see for yourself.

I take it you need full HD...?

Image burn-in and image retention problems have been significantly reduced in newer plasmas. I would only be concerned if I was connecting a PC that has static images like the Start bar, or running games with static HUDs and no cut scenes or cinematics for hours on end. I have had the past three SA vs Ind tests on my PS42C450 for 10+ hours a day for 15 days, with an opaque information bar at the bottom of the screen, and not one bit of IR or IB-I.

What will you be using your TV for?

Didn't someone mention a full-HD plasma @ 50" for < R10k recently... ?

I will be connecting a PS3 to it but my need for Full HD would also depend on if these games require Full HD.

So only 20 something odd games support 1080p....hmmm

We're talking native resolutions here, to the GPU, not necessarily what is shown to the user. Obviously, the GPU upscales when it sends out the signal. Upscaling rendered images works a lot better than upscaling e.g. video.
