Hmmm... that makes the 3D option of the D490 quite a lot more expensive than the D450...

Non 3D
43D450 - R6000

3D
43D490 - R7000 + R2000 (for 2 x glasses) = R9000

Yeah, or +(x * R1000) where x = the max number of ppl you might ever want to invite over for a 3D movie or whatever...
I went with the D490 coz the better processor (to do 3D) is apparently better than the D450 at upscaling, etc as well

Does anyone know when the 51D550 will be released in SA if ever?

I've been holding out for that one but I havent been able to find out if its going to be released anytime soon.

I think in about a week or two... I didn't ask about exact models, but Samsung said the 50" (or 51") Full HD plasmas would be in stock around mid May.

Tafelberg price is R11 500. Not bad :)

They are not sure when the higher-end models (D6500, D7000, D8000) will be available.

I just bought the 51 inch PS51D550 at Tafelberg Furnishers. Awesome!

Got them down to R11k. I was planning to get a D490 but when testing 720P vs 1080P at my home viewing distance I could notice a difference in picture quality. I took my own .MKV videos with on usb.

I can't give too much feedback yet but once I've played around with it some more I'll give an update.

Congrats! I am also trying to decide between the 43D490 and 51D550...

What is your viewing distance?
I have been comparing 43" and 51" with a projector at home, and 51" feels too big for my viewing distance of just over 3m. Maybe I'll get used to it? Movies with 2.35:1 ratio are fine with 51", but full screen 16:9 seems a bit too intense? :)

My viewing distance is 2.8m to 2.9m. It's definitely not too close for a 51" with 16:9 media. Top Gear in HD 16:9 was very impressive. I'd definitely recommend it. But first check if you can tell much difference between 1080P and 720P from your viewing distance. Best to take your own 720P/1080P rips on usb to the store and check it out. You could very well be happy with the 51d490 for R2k less than the d550.

We got the 43D490 coz we thought 51 would be too big and intrusive in our living area, but now that it's up on the wall, I think a 51 would have been fine as well :)
Our viewing distance is 3m as well.

50" is perfect for 3m. 3m is a relatively far viewing distance. Personally I wouldn't bother too much with FHD from 3m either, although it is said FHD is more noticeable from 50" and up.

Cool, thanks... In the shop, the 51" size seems fine (I tested at a viewing distance of 3m), but at home it just seems huge! I probably just need to get used to it. What size was your previous screen?

After a month or 2 of getting a 42" you will probably wish you got the 50". :D

just read this article on engadget. Apparently Samsung are dropping the prices on their active 3D glasses. Not sure if these are the glasses that work with the D-series plasmas though...
