MTN Uncapped Lite for R299

Thx....I think my throttle switch has been activated this morning..:D...but my browsing is still very fast. I get between 350-500kbps. Is that good?
I think we all yearn for more speed after throttling(I would relish 1MBit), but to be fair to MTN, their throttled speed exceed that which they advertise.
For all purposes except torrents etc it is the best solution on the mobile market, except maybe 8ta's 10Gb @ R199

Why "except torrents"?

My torrents download at the maximum speeds possible. When throttled, its about 30-40 kilobytes per second and when not throttled I have seen it go to 300-400 kilobytes per second. Faster than any HTTP download has ever gone (when not throttled. When throttled my HTTP downloads match my torrents).

I have not had that experience with torrents, only with newsservers.

Hi all

I am considering getting the uncapped lite deal on the 12 months contract, Im in Durban Overport area.

Can anyone give any advice on the speeds around Durban/Overport/Musgrave area.

I know the first 3 gb would be okay but after this how is it.

I wont be downloading but will be youtubing, streaming radio etc.

How long roughly would it take to load up google to search.before and after the 3gb)

Would a 5 minute video on youtube buffer constantly.(before and after the 3gb)

I heard it drops to EDGE speed which i have on the blackberry and it isnt too bad but different story I suppose when on a laptop.

Any advice would be great. Durban ideally.

Buy a MTN pre-paid sim and do a speedtest before getting the uncapped and email the MTN coverage Team and ask them if you have suitable 3g coverage in your area. I stream, it takes a while though after the 3gig.

When you say takes a while.....so a 5 minute clip how long would it take to buffer to watch it right through as I dont mind this happening if I have to wait a bit..

Hi Foz, no sorry in George. I almost made the mistake of applying for a contract before testing as I live on a farm. I'm checking speed/time for youtube now...Ok a 5min youtube music video takes about 8-10 minutes but DEPENDS on your speed after the 3gig...my speed when capped (after) is quite good I get between 500-700 kbps. Hope this helps:D I am seriously happy with the uncapped lite...my browsing is very fast, uploading photos to FB, downloading work stuff...downloading takes a while, but doesn't bother me. And if you test, test in every room in house, cause some places you get more faster speeds.

Go to your nearest MTN and asked them about the speeds. Maybe they can explain better than me. I was very sceptical at first. But I am happy with the lite. Even after I was throttled, browsing etc, can't complain.

oh yes and google takes about 3seconds after capped.

Another example, while throttled I watched the Lady Gaga Alejandro official video on YouTube, good quality and if I can remember correctly it's about 7 min long. It did buffer constantly but I pause it, wait for it to download a bit, play again, pause for a bit etc, etc. Took about 15 min before the whole thing was ready to watch. While it's on pause and busy downloading I surf other websites without any problems and it's still surprisingly fast.

Like Maddie, I can't complain. I'm in Pretoria by the way...

Excellent cheers Swaar..exactly the type of feedback I was looking for! if i have to wait a few minutes for something to load then thats fine.

As long as browsing is still ok then i will be happy.

My pleasure. Yeah, browsing is fine.

Man oh man I wish I found this thread before I signed that 12 month uncapped lite contract. They are supposed to reset my soft data cap on the 13th or the 14th of every month. I watch my downloads like a hawk and only reach my fair use limit on the 11th of each month. But for the last two months they never reset my account until I phone them like 10 times and write a report on hellopeter. They then send me copy paste replies, asking me to fill in a form that contains questions such as 1)What was the weather like at the time of connection era, 2)Where there large buildings in the area I was trying to connect etc etc. This is after I had gone through a detailed explanation stating that my signal was perfect and I am able to get hsdpa signal. I mean, what is next, are they going to ask me if the aliens are stealing my bandwidth?

Oh well, so glad I see there are other people experiencing similar issues. Is there any legal recourse I have, can I get my contract cancelled without paying excess remaining fees? I have kept a perfect record of data used, connection speed, daily, monthly and yearly, through a software program, not the con of a program MTN gives us on the usb modem/dashboard. I tell you, I hate being in a bad mood and complaining but I am seriously ready to do my nut. It is pure incompetence in my opinion and is emphatically typical of the level of service you can expect from most large corporations in South Africa. It is almost like we are supposed to be spoon feeding them and getting their loyalty.

Anyways, I am not going to go on ranting over this repetitive insanity of disillusionment, if anyone knows what other steps I can take to resolve this or cancel my contract, please let me know. Thanks all and thank you for the informative reading, wish I had seen this before the MTN lies and twisted money making scheme. Awesome, God Bless all.

I sincerely hope that you get this sorted out, it's not nice paying for something and getting all these hassles....I wonder sometimes if MTN knows what they're doing????

A week after I got my cap, I was throttled, but I was only throttled at 4,2 gig. That was three weeks ago. A few days ago I received a sms telling me that I have reached my limit and am on fair use :wtf: So now I'm still waiting for them to reset the cap....I hope

Awesome, thanks for the reply, yeh for me it was the same except for the first two months I never recieved an sms telling me my fair use had been reached, only the last month did I receive such an sms, and now, even today, they still have not reset my data cap. This is completely pathetic, seriously irratating and not condusive to ethical business codes of conduct. Basically it is theft, except, in the small print of the contract it states that they(MTN) have the rite to reduce data speed when and if they see a need to. SO, in other words, when the uninformed public signs this contract we are basically paying for them to scam us.

Oh well, justice is almost non existent these days. But I am not going to let these type of people get me down, I have my own companies code of conduct I make sure is always above board and each of my clients gets 100 percent satisfaction on every single job. Since I have ensured this small practice is done every time and for every client, no matter their socio-economic status, my business has grown by leaps and bounds in a very short time. Oh well, thank you for your reply, I reckon I am going to get a deal from another service provider and just donate this modem and sim to some needy school where they can at least use it to download learning material. I hope they keep the downloads on day and night so as to make MTN cake en betaal. Here's to hoping for a South Africa governed by reason, ethics and honor in all things. God Bless and have an awesome weekend.

Just a quick heads up, I have searched a couple of days now and have found ICASA to be the best option so far, for going the legal route. I still have not had any help from MTN at all, just a return email saying they are very busy and will attend to me A.S.A.P. Amazing, I know why they are so busy, when you con people, that spider web just gets more and more difficult to sustain. Anyways, I will keep you posted but I am reaching the point where. no matter how difficult, no matter how much time and money it costs, I will see MTN answer for their treatment of this situation. Sorry but I just cannot stand injustice and ineptitude any longer. Still at 40kb/s, lost a major contract today because of this. No more MTN, you not only cost me the money I am paying for a contract that is not worth the price it is written on, you have also, resonantly caused me to lose a contract, and if those whom I employ, from the lower socio economic groups of South Africa, lose their job because of it, then I am going to be highly aggravated. Anyways, that is enough from my side I will not be putting others on this forum through my own hell with MTN. Sorry for the moaning all, thanks for the cool forum and have a mellow weekend.

Ha, ha, ha, That is awesome, My speed finally went up to normal, 15,5 MB/S. Literally, 1 minute after writing my previous post, the speed kicked in. Sheesh I wish someone at MTN would tell me what the issues are every single month so in future I don't have to give myself a freakin nervous breakdown and loose thousands just because of data speed. Oh well, let this be a lesson to everyone, DO NOT GET MTN UNCAPPED LITE. I am going to give this modem to a charity and go with some other network. Seems the best at the moment in terms of speed and price is Vodacom. Awesome y'all, I will still be taking this to ICASA, so as to also take a stand for thsoe that do not know how to wage war to get what they signed for.
