MWEB Mobile Data with Cell C SIM

Hi all!

I'm currently using Cell C prepaid and therefore have a Cell C SIM in my phone, which is not dual SIM capable (as is the case with most phones).

2GB of data from Cell C costs a ridiculous R249, but a 2GB month-to-month data offering from MWEB, which still runs on the Cell C network, and is therefore exactly the same thing, will cost R99 per month.

I therefore want to find a way to use MWEB's data whilst using Cell C airtime.

With Afrihost, you can get an Afrihost SIM card, or you can use an APN on your MTN SIM.

I just called MWEB's tech support now, and the guy said that this is not possible with MWEB, and that you have to use the MWEB SIM for their mobile data. To make sure he understood what I was saying, I asked him if I will need to remove my Cell C SIM from my phone to use the internet, and then when I wanted to make a call or send an SMS, remove my MWEB SIM and re-insert my Cell C one. He said, "Yes".

Naturally, my questions are:

Why is MWEB's Cell C data not using the same system as Afrihost's MTN one

And is there any way to get around either being forced to spend R249 on 2GB of data forever from Cell C, or using the method described above?

Thanks in advance :)

You can get much more data from Cell C for R99pm:

1. Cell C Giga100/Giga200 prepaid SIM R999 valid for one year, you can perhaps move your phone number to this SIM (before you RICA). Voice tariff is fixed to 99c/pm, you can't change to 66c/pm.

2. With contract you get LTE MiFi device for similar usage: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-month-for-R99-plus-15GB-night-time-data-deal

Thanks for the info! It's unfortunate that the only options to get reasonably priced data are to buy a bunch upfront, or sign a contract. I wonder why prepaid monthly data is so expensive in comparison.

I'm going to call MWEB sales on Monday to make sure about the APN thing.

The reason for paying upfront is that you won't lose unsused data on the end of month. :)

That is quite a nice advantage. Does prepaid on a monthly basis generally not roll unused data over to the next month?

Update:

Called MWEB sales yesterday.

Me: "Hi there. I wanted to find out if I will be able to use an APN with an existing Cell C SIM to access MWEB mobile data, or if I have to use an MWEB SIM."
Rep: "You have to use an MWEB SIM."
Me: "So I'll have to remove my Cell C SIM to access the internet, and then remove the MWEB SIM to make a call or send an SMS every time?"
Rep: "Yes."
Me: "So what is this offering designed for? Tablets that can't do voice calls?"
Rep: "Yes, and the dongle."
Me: "I see. You know Afrihost, right?"
Rep: "Yes."
Me: "They also have a mobile data offering, but theirs runs on the MTN network. If you already have an MTN SIM, you can use an APN so that you can access airtime and data simultaneously on your cell phone, as you should be able to. MWEB's data is cheaper, so I'd like to get it through you instead of Cell C. I just wanted to make absolutely sure that I can't use the same method Afrihost's and MTN's customers can."
Rep: "No, you can't."

@MWEBHelp , this is really unfortunate. Especially since your mobile products have been around two years longer than Afrihost's.
