Right. I am going to give M-Web another week to sort this out, then I'll switch to Openweb.

I have come to this same conclusion as well. Ive been very patient and understanding till now. But after more than 7 calls to the "Premier" tech support call centre and emails to them showing my pathetic http speeds and nothing has been done and no call backs or anything......im giving up on MWEB.......which is most unfortunate.

@will, could you please give me so sort of response.

You say, it's a contended service and that speeds will vary, which is real life, fair and we must accept that.

I say I accept it.

Now on do you,

Do you think it's fair of mweb to help themselves of R899pm from my bank account and serve me a 20kbps http download of a fairly small file. Please tell me, DO you think THIS is fair and acceptable and that we should just live with it?

/edit and it's not like the above is a glitch, cable break or whatever. If it was, I wouldn't be posting this. But this has been going on 24/7 for 2 straight weeks.

Hi,

Please turn your router off for 45-90mins,
its all working fine on my side(my ethernet cable is plugged right into the backbone)

Right - so I decided to do a little test.

M-Web:
=====
Speedtest.net - 0.06Mbps down, 0.3Mbps up, 30ms ping.
Youtube: Takes 30 to 40 minutes to load a 5 minute music video.
iTunes music store streaming: unusable - buffers every 2-3 seconds.
Skype: unusable.
Explanation: "get your ports reset, we'll reauthorise your account and suddenly it'll all be amazing" - done and done, it's still useless.

Openweb ON THE SAME LINE:
======
Speedtest.net - 3Mbps down, 0.45Mbps up, 40ms ping
Youtube: the same videos download almost fast enough to stream - if you pause it for a few seconds it has enough of a buffer to watch without buffering more.
iTunes: All previews work, all streaming works, the store loads instantly, app updates download at 150 - 250KB/s.
Skype: Works for the first time in months!

There you have it - proof that on NON-P2P, M-Web is obviously shaping severely.

So I just email [email protected], right?

Is news.mweb.co.za the correct news server address? Because everytime I try to use it, it says "unable to connect" and I don't know what's wrong :/ , I've followed guides etc. and still nothing

Yes Sir. Port 119. No SSL.

They'll email you with a form you need a fill out. Will only take a few seconds.

mweb news server don't work with altbinz and hardly on grabit(yes i know for most guys it, work it refuses to work for me) , if using one of those 2 usenet downloaders, you need use sabnz, what i am using for my downloads , and you can upload rar files direct ,no need extract them :P

Can do all that with AltBinz to... straight from a .rar/.zip file. And it auto extracts and auto pauses par2 files and downloads them if it needs to. Otherwise it discards them.

mine did not take rar files, auto extract hardly worked, only did once or twice, though download speed though was awesome with it ,with paid news server!! ( seems more constant)

i had old version, did not use pay option that's on there website.

though think my pc just hates altbinz lol

for what it's worth our MWEB business lines (bonded solutions) have been bouncing like a yoyo over the last 3 days. getting any help from MWEB is a futile exercise. so it appears that there are problems all round and not just on the commercial uncapped offerings.

MWEB - what gives?

Hi MagicDude4Eva,

Please can you PM me your MWEB Business account details and I will escalate this to our Business Department to look into. I will also get them to contact you.

Regards,
MWEB Guy

What gives ?
GREED. Dirty corporate greed and bonuses paid not on customer satisfaction but purely on earnings. Customers are mere pawns in the corporate greed game. MWEB is no different from your bank screwing you or the insurance company screwing you with the fine print.

Shew, I was gonna sign the 1mb uncapped option from Mweb, but it's seems that would be a huge mistake? I just had a flick thru the 500 odd pages, and didn't see one "I'm so happy" or "shot Mweb you rock!!" ouch!!!

Talking about business accounts, I have the fishbone bonded service from Datapro, 4x4mbs lines, lately it's also been up and down and seems my torrents are getting shaped heavily, now if I find out I am being shaped I'm gonna flip my lid as its R70 a gig. On the service side, if you know who to talk to Datapro can be great.

Well I am on a business uncapped 4096 package that I get through HostWorx. I pay R569 for lower contention ratios and that has been the case for the 10 months that I have been using this account........until the past 2 weeks or so. I would want to ask WILL@MWEB to pm to him my details but not sure if that would help at all. I have done that with MWEB guy and to several people at the call centre and still no real answers or feedback......other than making sure I understand that I downloaded 170GB for May. Yeah? So what, thats about average for this type of account I would think.

Hi MWEB Guy

Is there an estimated time on when you'll be finished upgrading all the 512 lines today?

Thanks

@WILL Then please have this issue investigated because thats what kind of speeds i have been getting when trying to download anything from iTunes or software updates from international websites.

I also decided to run the GLASNOST test that was posted on here by another user. I ran the test to check if my ISP is shaping my HTTP download speeds and the results are VERY telling indeed!! Not suprised to see......just more proof that shaping is indeed happening all around.

Glasnost: Test if your ISP is shaping your traffic
Results for your host (41-133-126-215.dsl.mweb.co.za - 41.133.126.215):
Is your upload traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your uploads.
Is your download traffic rate limited?

Your ISP appears to rate limit your downloads.

Details:

* Your ISP appears to rate limit your HTTP downloads. In our tests, downloads using control flows achieved up to 150 Kbps while downloads using HTTP achieved up to 199 Kbps.

* Your ISP appears to rate limit downloads on port 52075. In our tests, downloads on port 52075 achieved up to 199 Kbps while downloads on port 51020 achieved up to 155 Kbps.

Totally unacceptable in my books........for a 4096KBps Business uncapped account!!!! :(

thanks guys

Interesting. Mweb, you are a bunch of scammers, plain and simple. You deserve to loose all your clients. I would still like to know what you really installed in London. Paying R539.00 per month for such a downgraded service allowing me to to download 95GB a month is just an disgrace, for that dosh I can rather buy 50GB capped and have the pleasure of having a system running at full speed and on top of it I do not have to wait days for a download to complete with all the Mweb's many many unbearable frustrations. Then I rather pay R1000.00 for the 100GB data I need. It was fun while it lasted but unfortunately Mweb became a major fail.

Bye Bye Mweb, WA or Openweb will see my dosh soon.
