I possibly have the opportunity to get a good deal on a well looked after 2002 BMW k1200rs.

Any advice and/or thoughts appreciated. I'm coming from a CBR 250R...

Yes, buy it, now.

Something desperately amazing about that bike, not sure what.

But in all honesty rather wait for advice, I'd say ask in the BMW forum as well, see what maintenance is on that thing and if parts are still available.

Beautiful bikes. You'll be upgrading from a potato to ripe watermelon.

Oooooo i'm not sure. 250's of recent have power like the 125's in the old days.
My Suzuki Gamma 50cc had more power than the 125's of today.

Something like that yeah, gennies and cement mixers tend to be more powerful. I know the old 4 pot 250's put out north of 35 40 bhp but then again today's little bikes are so efficient you can drive to the moon and back with R3.50
 
You guys are funny.

Something like a 250 Ninja is 39hp and a cbx 125 is only 17hp. (CBX 250 is rated at 24hp BTW - dunno why is so down on power for a 250, maybe aimed at entry level riders.)

How long have you been riding?
I was on my 390 Duke for 9 months before I climbed on an R1200GS. Another 8 months then I climbed onto my S1000XR.

The important things on a big machine like are the traction control and the ABS. Don't get on one without it.

S1000XR is one hell of a machine! As soon as I have saved enough of a deposit for a trade in on a F800GS ADV then I am upgrading to that beauty for sure.

I maintain that it is the best bike in it's class and by far the best bike in the BMW stable. I cannot get enough of it.

I've taken it on 2 track days, Done the Eastern Transvaal 2x and Clarens 2x all times 2 up. I've scraped pegs with my wife on the back too. This bike's sales in SA doesn't do the bike justice.

Enjoy it.

They taught us at the off road class I did, that if you have a mate that falls on a 1200BMW, do them a favor and hit the kill switch before you check if they're ok - otherwise the engine runs without oil or something.

So, don't let it fall over and run for any duration of time, would be my advice.

It's not a boxer 1200. It's an I4.

If only it had a hydraulic clutch instead of that terrible cable clutch I might have agreed with you.

Heh? Any modern bike cuts out virtually instantly when it falls over.

Yeah when riding in traffic you need to nurse that engine with the clutch the whole time because it’s rev obsessed and does nothing at the bottom?

Do you ride every day? Or only on occasion?

I simply couldn’t deal with it as an every day bike. And I expected to love it.
