That's usually what I would call illegal as they apply equally to cars and motorcycles and all times.

The problem with us riding bikes is that we get used to being in motion and then start taking liberties that we consider normal and legal and carry on until advised otherwise.

Also if you are crossing yellow triangle zones that's also a no no.

This wasn't on Marine Drive where you cross over into the left lane to head onto the N1 by any chance?

No no, this was coming off the N7, onto Bosmansdam road in Montague Gardens. According to the traffic official, splitting lanes on a curve is not going to sit well. I'm very keen on staying within the law, so I make damn sure no solid lines are cross, or splitting in the path of oncoming traffic. I would rather stop and wait in line than do a move that could be illegal.

If you familiar with that turn off, there's a solid line for the left lane which then turns into Bosmansdam road. I was in the left of the solid line, and kept to the left of the cars are they turned off into Bosmansdam. This turnoff is a single lane, so was between the cars and the solid line. I was in my opinion within the law, but judging by how quickly the official jumped up to pull me over, I guess that wasn't allowed.

Hence I'm now a bit confused as to when splitting is illegal and when it's not... Tried looking online at the law, but they all say as lone as no solid lines is crossed and you don't endanger other traffic or other road rules...
 
Lane Splitting is and probably always will be a substantial grey area.

Although I know the area I can't quite see the situation in my mind.

Sounds like you were splitting between two lanes of cars but rather a shoulder and then cars only on one side which I can see aggravating the po po.

There is a traffic cop in Cape Town with a known vendetta against bikes and pulls them over based on his own rules. Can't recall his name but if you check the fine I'll remember it.

How much was the fine? Presumably a hand written summons? Maybe it's worst going to court to find out why exactly and then maybe even get it nullified if incorrect.

Yes, you have the right image of the situation. Was a female official, so doubt you'll know her. And yes, hand written summons for 1.5k. But of a bummer, but you live and learn I guess. Although I could argue the point that their view point of where I apparently broke the law was a bit suspect.

Strange thing, while talking to me and questioning my knowledge of the road rules, when they looks at my boots, they enquired if I was a traffic official myself, or had family who were traffic officials. I suspect they though I had on their own service issued riding boots or something. They can't fine you for your type of riding gear, can they?
 
Mind you, I just downloaded a copy of the traffic offense codes book. Seems that splitting into oncoming traffic earns you a nice 3.5k fine. Same with passing over vehicles using the shoulder of the road.... Hectic stuff
 
If you lane split into a turn off that means you will be 'overtaking' illegally since you go into a single lane. Any turn off means no more splitting and you should be fully in-lane before turning off.

Awesome ride though but the usual rubbish/ animals on road plus school kids lobbed rocks at me.

I wish I could afford a few bikes in the garage. Actually, wish I could afford a garage ;)
 
That's better than expected actually.

Scary though considering just 3 years ago I paid R117500 for a Street Triple R with almost all extras.
 
I'm pretty sure my engine oil is supposed to get replaced at every service... I'm also pretty sure when it gets replaced they fill it to max... Why then is my oil at essentially the same level as before the service :mad:
 
They shouldn't fill up to max. Your oil level should be somewhere between the min and max indicators. Too much oil can be as bad as not enough oil.

Just check it though- new(ish) oil shouldn't be completely black (at least not for the first couple hundred / thousand km).

Well in about 30 odd services my dad had on his bikes with this engine, they always went close to max. I assume because they know it tends to lose about 500ml each 5000km. And yes, oil is already black in the window after having done about 100km

They didn't change your oil then, unless you have a diesel bike.

My oil is still clear after >1000 km

That is what I suspect... Just want to check my invoice before I call them because I'm pretty sure they replaced the oil filter too (or claimed to) so I guess I'll need to bully them into doing that again

Oh, my oil level is at about 25%, way too low for after having done a oil change imo

Take them to the cleaners!

Also, take you oil there too so it isn't black anymore.

Are you checking the oil level through the sight glass? If so - if the bike standing upright or on its sidestand?
