I try to keep my speed extra slow when splitting thru stationary cars. Avoided a few pedestrians walking between the cars. with them not checking at all whats coming between the cars. Double especially if it's a bus. I've had two close calls like that, people who have gotten off the bus sitting at a robot and then blindly walking out.

Yah, pedestrians are oblivious to bikes, even more so than cagers. There are usually more jay walkers when there is a taxi rank or shopping centre near by.
 
The look on their faces when you hoot at them from 2m away is priceless.

Not true for all bikes.

And in many cases car diesel oil is very much the same thing as used in bikes, so to say don’t use “car oil” is a bit generic as it can be literally one and the same thing.

I took my XR on the Proficiency Safety Skills and Advanced Cornering Techniques courses with BMW Rider Academy at Zwartkops this weekend. What a freaking day!! I thoroughly enjoy it and I highly recommend anyone doing it.

My plan is to do this course next month or the month after. Could you possibly elaborate on the curriculum?

Separate question @Faniebraai - was it you on the FZ09 on republic this morning? I was the slowpoke that gave way :)

On my side the pedestrian was not as lucky. She hit the ground hard, but fortunately for me I managed to stop the bike from falling (sporty - so not the lightest). Rode on and parked ahead of the traffic ( robot was two car lengths away) and walked back to see if she was okay. She must've thought that Christmas came early coz the expression change was priceless when I started kakking her out for jaywalking instead of just walking the two car lengths and crossing were it was safer. And guess what, when the *** out session was over, she crossed the road in the same fekking spot /facepalm

The PSS was a waste of time for me. It was about doing u-turns, emergency stops, slaloms, counter steering (We practiced the last one at 25km/h, so we couldn't counter steer). Really basic stuff.

The ACT was awesome, basics on body positioning, counter steering at higher, throttle control speeds and putting these into practice on the track.

The XR was really in its element here!

That sounds like fun! I'm surprised they allowed the use of the track - I asked them, and apparently the track rental is R18k per 1/2 day.

Although, I'm sure they have an understanding with the track owners.

Engine manufacturers design their engines around the type of oil that they intend to use in it. Not the other way round. The oil journals and clearances are specific to the type of oil that they intend on using. So you're welcome to put diesel oil in your bike, and it will probably work fine, but its not really designed for it.

Motorcycle oil has anti foaming agents that car oil does not need, so when you're revving at 12K RPM the oil doesn't churn up. Car oil doesn't need this because most car engines barely rev past 6000. Not to mention car oil doesn't need to worry about shear resistance caused by meshing gears, because its no where near the gearbox. These additives in bike oil will make your bike engine and gearbox last longer than using car oil. So by all means, make use of car oil if you have to, but neither the manufacturer nor any reputable mechanic would recommend it.

Bike doesn't rev past 8000, check
Engine oil doesn't go close to the gears, check
Dealer fills it up with "car" oil, check

Your point of view really only applies to bikes with oil that is shared between the transmission and engine, plenty of bikes don't have that. And when they do and you read your owners manual, I'd be very surprised to find any "car" oil meet those specs.

Yes, so most bikes then. Your GS need not apply to this then :p But 90% of motorcycles do share their oil with the transmission. For those bikes, this applies.

Indeed, Hence me saying don't do it. I've met plenty of people who didn't know any better and popped off to midas in search of oil for their bike. They found the cheapest thing that says 10w40 on the tin and threw it straight in. To those people, you are doing it wrong!
 
Went to the mt09 in the real today. Was the first time seeing it. And wow, that was a mistake. Now I want the bike even more.

Feels so light, so nimble, so premium. Didn't get to test ride it though.
