People don’t realise just how elastic a chain is and the delayed throttle response until they ride something else with a belt or shaft and take note of it.

I'd go straight to the F800.. Otherwise you'll just end up there anyway, but with more money spent. Plus, more readily available second hand than the V-strom.
 
it has probably been asked before, but do you guys think an x-ring chain is worth it over an o-ring chain?

Whats the price difference like? My factory o-ring chain is at 23746km and is still perfectly fine. Since getting the bike at 12000km i've adjusted the chain by about 2mm on the swing arm adjuster.
I apply Motul C5 paste around every 1000-1500km, and my riding style is "enthusiastic".

So from that i'd say 0-ring is just fine.

fair point. Do you think there is any benefit from the reduced rolling friction? is it even a factor?

You might see a wee bit less sprocket wear.

Is it measurable? Probably. Would you notice in the real world? Probably not.

If you have the cash and you don’t need to sacrifice something else then by all means do it.

If it’s an either or thing, then rather get both things. :)
 
brake fluid - 2 years
brake lines - 4 years
fork oil - 1 year
wheel bearings - 50 000km

so apparently these are recommended intervals for changing these items, who here is over due?

What year and price range are you looking at? Also how tall are you? When you say starter bike, how much riding experience do you have?
 
haha i think almost everyone is, im not sure if these are accurate i just aw them on a video, i doubt the dealers even do this.
 
Nah, I've blown fork seals enough that fork oil is probably the only thing not keeping me up at night.

Fork Oil generally 2-3 years or 30,000km.

My brake fluid gets done with every service.

BMW was the first manufacturer ever to stick to the book recommended fork oil service. Every other lot just glossed over it like it didn’t exist.

Brake lines I guess would depend if they are braided or not etc.

I have never done any of those things.... Bike is on 60k ...

It’s the kind of thing that I tend to figure you do if there’s an issue.

Suspension starting to feel wonky and erratic? Change the oil.

Brakes getting a bit closer to the lever even while pads are fresh? Change the fluid.

It’s a bit of odd preventative maintenance really.

I’ve replaced wheel bearings on only my Buell because they failed prematurely under recall.

how easy is it to change the fork oil? any special tools needed?
