So 1mbs accounts will always perform better than 40mbs accounts.

Sorry I think I misread that message or it was edited mid-quote.

1Mbps will be shaped down when contention hits, as will 40Mbps, proportionately based on account speed.

I'm just asking because it seems that the faster the account goes it will be the first to fall to shaping because of the propability of increased usage in peak hours.

You can only do so much because of 1mbs whereas on a 40mbps you can naturally more than 1mbs.

So if both users are online in peak time the 40mbs is most likely going to be doing more? Then when the shaper applies the rule-egine, the 40mbs will be the shaped first and not the 1mbs. Therefor it seems that the 1mbs users will likely to have a better overall experiance than anyone else on a faster line because of their likelyhood to use more.

This is what I got from reading the responses given:

So if you consume 100GB in peak and another customer 10GB in peak, and you are both downloading at the same time, the lower usage peak customer will have first access to the spare capacity

Not very logical?

A. 1mbs uncapped will always trump 40mbs uncapped or more.
B. facebooker will always trump a gamer.

Of course:

Streamer always trump everyone even if they watch the show 10x times vs the facebooker :D

Correct on A, but it's already based on line/account speed on our side as well.
Incorrect on B. Gaming gets top priority as the packets are latency sensitive.

Then I haven't explained it properly. It's not only based on usage - it's based on usage and account speed when the backend makes this determination. If it was based on usage alone we'd have a massive problem, as would end users. It's smart enough to know that a 1Mbps account and 40Mbps account will have very different usage patterns.

You can do more with a 40mbps than with a 1mbps because you pay a lot more for a 40mbps than for a 1mbps.

Haha, well you got me going there for a sec. Would have thought that would be strange indeed :D

Would love to see that rule-egine, must be one hell of a beast :D

Thanks for the explination.

Most likely implements some sort of fuzzy logic, so probably not static rules but more boundaries.

Great to hear, and thanks for the suggestions.

Usage doesn't drop from 9pm I'm afraid. Ever since the influx to streaming Netflix, Hulu, and so on, and the fact that we massively prioritise these, usage only drops reasonably at around 11:30pm and often a little later as well. On weekends, you've got sport, movies, and TV show streaming happening, but there's some room to look at this sort of thing in the future as well.

OK, so does this mean Gaming gets more priority than Screaming?

We never encourage screaming. :D

But we do prioritise gaming traffic massively as it is so incredibly latency sensitive. The exact nature of our network deployment and management however is confidential for various reasons, but needless to say, you're highly unlikely to ever have streaming or gaming issues on our uncapped accounts. To such an extent in fact that the moment I hear of streaming or gaming issues, I'm almost certain that we're looking at a non-ISP related issue.

Yo CW, I want to sign up my uncle's business for a capped account (as was discussed previously). Need the account for April, because tomorrow is the last day with Mweb.

Anyways, do you not have a sign up form tailored to a business? The one for capped accounts currently is tailored to personal accounts.

Talking to support now, sort this out please.

I'm considering moving my parents from their Afrihost capped account to a capped Crystalweb account (Netflix & Hulu have been shocking lately).

Is Crystalweb capped good for streaming Netflix & Hulu? What backbone does Crystalweb use?

Thanks

Both capped and uncapped are massively prioritised for streaming. In fact uncapped has higher priority for streaming as we really try to encourage its use. We use the Internet solutions backbone with our own custom shaping policies running over our own IPC. It's the best of all worlds. :)

Great, thank you. Do your uncapped accounts work on the same star-rating system as other IS uncapped accounts?
