I would agree somewhat with the idea that 2-4Mb/s connections are sub-par internet experiences, but they are overall better than other setups that attempt to be a replacement for fixed-line access, like 3G. If your needs are adequately served by a 2Mb line, then that's what works for you. When things like LTE, VDSL and Fiber become affordable and easily accessible, then the argument shifts to how upload speeds limit your use of your internet connection and how shaping rules affect you.

I would like nothing better than to have an ISP offer fiber packages where my upload speed is always half of my download speed. A 15Mb package would split into 10Mb down and 5Mb up. Even 4Mb down and 2Mb up would be many times better than 2Mb down and 0.38Mb up, which I currently have to contend with. I can't bump up to 10Mb because I'm still limited by a 0.5Mb upload by my exchange. I can't use 3G because there's too much contention for the towers here in Jbay. VDSL is about two years away (Dark Fiber has a project in progress that will have fiber lines passing almost straight through Jbay).

I just wish company's would get proactive with their fiber deals. Yes, there are those trying - but there is so much potential already sitting dormant in the ground!

I wish we could somehow get it rolling - so that we have internet how its supposed to be. Not, as you said, 0.38Mbps upload! I mean - what can you even do with that O_o

I guess the main problem is that few people responsible for comms networks in SA realised the long-term benefits of migrating to a fiber network. Copper stayed cheap for years because people utilised it almost everywhere, while fiber technology continued to be expensive. There was probably some collusion between comms network providers and copper suppliers in the past, but now we're being clearly held back by old tech.

I don't know why someone didn't pipe up long ago and go, "Say, if we make the migration to fiber starting now, we'll have to do less infrastructure upgrades because you can re-use fiber for years and only change the signaling hardware at either end of the connection." If Telkom had begun the process 10 years ago, they'd be much closer to being on full fiber today.

That said, I appreciate the difficulties Telkom has had in the past to monetise exchanges and get them profitable to be able to do timely upgrades and stay with the tech curve, whilst also combating cable theft. Its not a simple solution as everyone thinks and they've been held back tremendously by poor decisions by ex-CEOs and middle management. They also have a limited subscriber base and they don't serve internet to the majority of SA citizens.

Honestly, when you consider that Telkom ONLY STARTED offering 1Mb/s connections in 2005 and trialed 4Mb/s in 2006, do you get the sense of the scale of how far we've come and how much we're still lagging behind the rest of the world. Our first DSL option was the 512/256 down/up offering back in 2002.

CW NS down?

Is anyone still finding HTTP downloads to be slow?
Mine start off at line speed then drop to this :(

Just wanna check here before I bother support.

It's a known issue, CW said a fix is coming in awhile..

I thought it was fixed on Friday - I remember CW asking us to reboot our routers.

I been watching the download and its up and down. Jumps up to 400 and then drops to 60, wash, rinse, repeat :(

Isn't this how their shaping tools work? It's to restrict big downloads when the network is stressed.

If I had used up all of my Tier 1 unshaped data then this would be fine but I'm still well within my unshaped data.

Torrents fly but http is up and down.

Woah, performance today the worst it's ever been. Loading gmail? 5 minutes! Loading a mail in it? Give it another 5! I was lucky this forum loaded in less than 2.

4 seconds on gmail and 1 second opening a mail. Don't you by chance have a crappy router? Say goodbye to slow internet, get a Mikrotik router to experience super fast internet. :p (wish I was a Mikrotik salesman on this forum)

NNTP now running at a steady 0 kB/s. My exchange must be *really* congested. :D

The "we've run out of bandwidth" kind of going away?

Yeah, my account is running as it has since last week Tuesday IE at around 50% of max line speed...Despite assurances that the issue would be resolved, it has not!!
