Can you take a cheap UPS and hook a car battery up to it? I know someone did something like that on the WUG a few years ago for a solar HS I think.

Im considering doing that at the moment, I know you can link two or more batteries together so surely you could use a car battery.

Have you tried replacing the battery in it and fuse - Generally thats all that goes wrong with them.

I checked the fuse but thats fine. It's the batteries that are shot.
I asked around and was told that cost wise I'm better off buying a new UPS than having the batteries replaced.
Until now, I never had a reason to need a UPS. I bought the Mecer UPS because we had load shedding back in 2008 (I think)

Go to either A1 Radio or mantech with your batteries, What size batteries are they anyway? I know you can get the 600w ones for R100 +- (I think) But it's definitely not more expensive than replacing a UPS of that size.

Ay fuk I hate Eishkom, got us talking UPS's on a broadband thread :D

Yup - Eskom are the cause of our creativeness LOL and possibly a few people getting electrocuted from tampering with UPS's Too

Schweet, I didn't know A1 Radio stocked them. I'll strip this UPS when I get home and see what batteries I'm going to need and I'll hit A1 in Umgeni Road.
Thanks for the advise Lynx :)

Here's hoping I don't electrocute myself in the process...

Mantech will most probably be cheaper though, So try them first :)

A1 Have become rather expensive these past few years.

A UPS basically consists of a battery charger and an inverter. The inverter will be fine, but the charger will probably not cope with a car battery. Also you should never use a car battery for a UPS. You need special deep cycle lead acid batteries. They are designed do discharge to a lower level than car batteries. A car battery will not last for many charge/discharge cycles.

Why are my ping spikes so bad? Before I had the load shedding yesterday everything was fine...

You would still need an inverter tho to convert dc to ac.

Car battery => inverter => ups - in which case you wont need a ups which is basically a car battery and inverter in one.

Good advice!

Yes, this, sorry I misunderstood the previous car battery suggestion.

I counted no less than 10 telkom vans when driving out of winston park.

Looking forward to fiber :D, not looking forward to TI. :erm:

Live support can assist with this - always better than asking on the forum as we can't actually perform public diagnostics here on your account, nor can I reconcile your forum name with an account and perform a proper security audit.

However the Telkom network is suffering due to the load shedding and there are numerous network notices regarding this from them, specifically relating to reduced throughput, performance problems, and no connectivity around the country.

I'm looking to replace my ADSL-wifi-router with an ADSL modem and a wifi router (2 separate units). Can anyone please recommend good makes and model numbers.
