I have a black Mecer 1.5KVA, died a silent death last year RIP
Can you take a cheap UPS and hook a car battery up to it? I know someone did something like that on the WUG a few years ago for a solar HS I think.

Have you tried replacing the battery in it and fuse - Generally thats all that goes wrong with them.
I checked the fuse but thats fine. It's the batteries that are shot.
I asked around and was told that cost wise I'm better off buying a new UPS than having the batteries replaced.
Until now, I never had a reason to need a UPS. I bought the Mecer UPS because we had load shedding back in 2008 (I think)
Ay fuk I hate Eishkom, got us talking UPS's on a broadband thread![]()
Go to either A1 Radio or mantech with your batteries, What size batteries are they anyway? I know you can get the 600w ones for R100 +- (I think) But it's definitely not more expensive than replacing a UPS of that size.
Schweet, I didn't know A1 Radio stocked them. I'll strip this UPS when I get home and see what batteries I'm going to need and I'll hit A1 in Umgeni Road.
Thanks for the advise Lynx
Here's hoping I don't electrocute myself in the process...
A UPS basically consists of a battery charger and an inverter. The inverter will be fine, but the charger will probably not cope with a car battery. Also you should never use a car battery for a UPS. You need special deep cycle lead acid batteries. They are designed do discharge to a lower level than car batteries. A car battery will not last for many charge/discharge cycles. Can you take a cheap UPS and hook a car battery up to it? Im considering doing that at the moment, I know you can link two or more batteries together so surely you could use a car battery.

Why are my ping spikes so bad? Before I had the load shedding yesterday everything was fine...
