OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

@ Keeper Just to put things perspective price wise Openweb Home uncapped 4Mbps vs Telkom Capped and Uncapped 4Mbps.

You have a Telkom 4Mbps line so lets keep prices simple and unbundle everything for easy understanding.

4Mbps adsl line rental = R299 per month.

Openweb 4Mbps uncapped account = R249 per month
Telkom 20GB softcap account = R96 per month.

The reason I say its R96 per month is that once you have 20GB softcap and 4Mbps line with Telkom you will get the do advance bundle which is R395 for the line and data. So lets take the R395 - R299 for a the 4Mbps line only that gives us R96 just for the 20GB data.

So with openweb uncapped account you get unlimited data with shaping and Telkom you can get a 40GB [20GB softcap account + 20GB topup] from Telkom with uncapped usage between 00:00 and 7am everyday.

Telkom 4Mbps uncapped bundle will cost you R585 for the bundle with unlimted usage but with shaping on torrents and stuff.

Its just a quick comparison for you if you decide to change to Telkom. Capped account is ALWAYS pretty much full speed but with limited daytime cap so comparing capped with uncapped is not fair. You might find that Telkom uncapped is worse....

<snip> and Telkom you can get a 40GB [20GB softcap account + 20GB topup] from Telkom with uncapped usage between 00:00 and 7am everyday.

I don't understand how you get 40Gb? do Advanced gives you only 20GB doesn't it?

Anyway - I understand that comparing capped & uncapped is not correct - but after 00:00 they should both run at full speed. OpenWeb does not, Telkom does.
It used to when my line was running at 2Mbit....but at 4mbit it just doesn't.

I'm going to Telkom Uncapped, and if that doesn't work out i'll most likely make up my own bundle (4Mbit ADSL line @ R299 + 50GB capped @ R268) or just get the 20GB do Advanced bundle for cheap (R395) and monitor my usage.

I really don't need to download 24/7 - just between 00:00 - 07:00, and then fast browsing during the day and the odd youtube or so.
That's All I really want/need.

That is why I mentioned 20GB softcap + 20GB topup that costs R149 which puts the price +- the same as the openweb uncapped account.

I'll only go to capped as a last resort though, I'm too used to uncapped internet.

I'm sure If I stick to telkom's rules they will not throttle me. well... not as much as OpenWeb does at the moment anyway.

You could always try connection.co.za too. They are pretty good and accounts are directly resold IS based accounts so that is a advantage in a way. That and that it's only R199 for 4Mbps uncapped.

I don't see any mention of free data after 00:00 at night?

(I understand it's uncapped, but I want a "buffet" service where it doesn't affect your "rating" as such)

This is what I've been saying, only that I use them and don't have a problem, ever. Always fullspeed all weekend and after 5pm during the week (not that I download that whole time but the speed is there if you want). How is this done? Well, I'm not sharing my account with anyone.

Well, I downloaded exclusively between 0:00-6:00, and after 20 days I was still on 5 stars.

@ Keeper

Now I'm on 3 stars only because I've extended my DL'ing to run until 8am, but I just dialed into my PC at home (in PE at the mo, waiting at the airport), started nntp, and:

Attachment not opening this side. but don't worry about it.

I'll try Connection, then Telkom Uncapped, and if all else fails, use Telkom 20GB/50GB capped and download at night.

Don't know what went wrong, I just added it again, I can see the pic now.

Thanks for the advice man. you guys have been really helpful :)

Ok so, I can get a 6Mbps Home Uncapped account for about the same price as I am paying Telkom ISP for my 4Mbps Uncapped connection....Two quick questions: how reliable is their service? and how easy is it to cancel your service with them? Thanks in advance.

Reliability?
Well I have the 4mbps uncapped and it sucks. it's heavily throttled during the day. even after 12 at night I only got 1Mbps speeds... didn't you read my posts?

To cancel?
If you cancel before the 25th of a month you will have to remain there for another 35 days. cancel after the 25th and you will be stuck in OpenWeb hell for 65 days.

I gotta say, OpenWeb warned me about going to their Home Uncapped packages when I upgraded from 2mps OW Gold Uncapped at least... but damnnnnn they didn't tell me it would be 30kbps during the day and 100kbps after midnight.

What do your IS user stats say? If you can log in.
