OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

You're sure it will run at 40Mbps..? How can you be sure it will...? When others tested it that wasn't the case. They of course now claim that this has been fixed/amended.
Since when are you handing out test accounts for OW...?

I don't. I believe in people making their own decisions on what accounts to use. I have a reseller account with openweb I use for personal use so I can create my own accounts and manage it myself. I was going to offer him/her one from that to test it out for himself and make up his/her mind

I was one of the users who tested out the speeds on the capped accounts not so long ago - rate limited to 10mbps on everything on my 40mbps line.

I highly doubt anything has changed.

That is where you are wrong. I asked someone on mybb to test a account for me that have a 40Mbps line. He managed to get +-30Mbps download speed while I was connected with my 10Mbps line. That is how I came to the conclusion that the accounts are limited to 40Mbps.

I'll sign up for a smallish capped account and run tests on my 100mbps fibre line and post the results here.

That would be super awesome. Would be very interesting to see the results.

I can run the tests again for you if you would like to see if anything has changed?

I don't mind. Do you still have your account? If your account is limited to 10Mbps would you mind testing the capped account I have?

Perhaps it was a provisioning error on my account specifically, Send through your details on PM and I'll test them out as well as my details to see if there is a difference.

Please don't be so obtuse, he's only trying to help people.
You realise he has never had a 40Mb account with OW so a test account would have been worthless unless he had something different going on (out of the norm). That he only clarified afterwards which is fine of course.

Try not to be nobbish unnecessarily. Leave that for the LCD threads. Cavedog can speak for himself if he has issues with any of my comments . ;)

As per the Openweb Home page for Capped Unshaped:

What is Capped Unshaped?
Home Capped Unshaped offers top priority to our family members. You have no limitations on how fast you can go. The accounts will run at the speed of light or rather, at the speed of your ADSL line.

http://openweb.co.za/home-capped-unshaped/#features

Seems worth a try.

Also, as far as the 00:00 - 07:00 Uncapped portion of the Home Capped account goes:

So, What is Download Heaven?
Download Heaven can be seen as the ‘Midnight Buffet’ of the internet.

It offers unshaped downloads daily between 00:00 and 7am. This means that you will get full speed between these times no matter how busy our network might be.

Bold statements, if true. I think i'll sign up for a month and see what it's like. Give it a whirl at 40Mbps and see if it's always full linespeed.

I would stay away from OpenWeb if I were you...

Stay away from uncapped accounts, yes.

Do remember that when we dismantled them on this forum, it was their uncapped accounts. I myself was one of the most vocal critics, for a long time the most vocal.

These capped accounts seem very promising indeed.

At the end of the day, they are merely reselling similar stuff that other ISPs resell. They are merely a link between the customer and IS.

If the customer gets what the customer deserves with their capped accounts, why should they stay away?

Seems like OpenWeb has one of the best offerings at the moment, if you like IS.

We need to be objective here... Internet in SA is in dire straits for many people.

Hi all, quick question for you - I signed up with Openweb to test thier 2MB uncapped account (it was on special at R139 pm which seemed fair). After the first day I saw that it was essentially unusable, it wouldn't load websites and we couldn't even watch one or two youtube videos at 240p.

I mailed them asking for my money back as the service was unusable and they refused saying according to thier cancellation policy I can only cancel at the end of July.

While I don't mind the R139 too much thier attitude to the problem really got to me - is there anything I can do about this to cancel / get my money back or should I just sit the 1.5 months out?

Thanks
TL

Another victim. Who would anyone defend this ****

Interesting turnaround from you PP. Most of the criticism other than the dismal performance of the uncapped accounts was how they treated their customers and the fact that they weren't registered with the relevant bodies like other ISPs and ultimately only seemed to be accountable to themselves. Sharing of accounts and general dishonesty formed part of the massive backlash on the forum which still persists today.

BUT if you're willing to overlook all of that (and I will never support people with dishonest business practices, perceived or otherwise) then they may offer some value going by cavedog comments.

Oh I wouldn't ever touch them again, goes against all my values, but then again I'm not desperate. I see so many people who are.

I'm willing to overlook their past transgressions if the product is solid, other ISP's are leaving no choice.

Luckily I'm happy at my other ISP.

For most people, a capped account with them, will probably fly... especially for Mrs Jones and her dry martini who only ever visits the DSTV.COM website, and uses her webmail and if you ask her what Netflix is, she will tell you its a new cinema chain opening up in the local mall

Let me just state this here since some people on mybb only see what they want to see and not what is really happening.

Finger pointing at Openweb at their dishonesty while Crystalweb is left to continue as normal even though many people complain that they are experiencing bad service with them in terms of support and general account performance.

I used the Crystalweb home basic capped account before and it was poor performance during peak time on p2p and usenet. Openweb simply does not shape their capped accounts at all and you are allowed to do what you want during peak time at line speed.

I used both accounts equally during a full month and Openweb account is so much more superior.

Let me also just say that Openweb capped accounts can't be seen as a "premium"account compared to Crystalweb's Home basic account because they are priced the same. One is just unshaped and the other one is not.

My conclusion here is just for people to test the accounts before making your decision. No point in listening to people here and say okay I won't choose Openweb because some people think they suck. I don't. I think their capped accounts are just as good as Vox Fatpipe if not better and mybb knows how good those accounts are.

When it comes to Capped adsl Openweb is right there near the top. Uncapped is a completely different story and I tried most of their uncapped accounts and would really not recommend them as the most severely shaped uncapped account at another ISP is most likely faster than Openweb uncapped accounts.

That is my 2c. Take it,leave it or criticize it but that is how I experienced it.
