OpenWeb does not control the server Speedtest uses. This is decided by speedtest each time you perform a test, and does not accurately indicate where you are based.

Speeds at full again, and checked my location and it is now Pretoria haha

Gmail and similar must not be slow.

Kindly PM me your ADSL username so that I can do some tests

Hi they sent me a new username today already thanks but this is like the 20th time this has happened.
Surely something must be wrong if so many are having these issues?

It seems to be the worst during the late morning and early afternoon. I dont mind being shaped during that time, I dont download at the time anyway but I would like to at least have access to functional browsing. The speeds are so slow during that time-frame that pages are timing out.

Thanks for the reply, I Just really cant be bothered doing that right now. If it happens again tomorrow I will give that a try. I know internet is not something that can be diagnosed easily so I am understanding, this however cannot continue on a daily basis for the foreseeable future.

Hey guys / MR Beep

I emailed support and they gave me a response on the lines of

"we have changed the routing for your account"

What exactly does this mean / technical details.
I am a technical guy so i would like to know :)

When allowing Google Maps access to my location it showed me Cape Town, tried two different location identifying sites. After the speeds returned, Google Maps now shows my location as Pretoria

Been having the same slow daytime browsing issues as many of us with Gold accounts.
Issues started end last year, fine during holidays, issues started again on Monday.

I'm sick of sending PMs, e-mailing support every second day just to get the same ole...
"We're checking this, and changing that" replies. It makes no difference, a waste of time.
Just tell me straight up I'm being shaped/throttled.

11:02 PM and torrents are doing 50%, I'm not even complaining about that. But http/browsing is useless during the day??
If this continues, I refuse to give OW a month's notice and pay another R299, for dailup speeds.

If you thinking of getting an OW Gold account, read the last few pages here.

Oh and don't be fooled/rushed by the "only 32 accounts left" nonsense on their site.

after several rants and raves, messages, pm's and emails i'm still not happy.

my speedtests for the day, and i took quite a few, averaged between 15-26kbps. on a 4mb account. only after 00.30 my account run at full speed.

tested cybersmart everytime i tested ow and cybersmarts speed stayed 425kbps+

got the standard ow msg:

"I have checked your account and its active. UserName: *******@openweb.co.za Password: * Kindly contact Telkom on telephone number 10210 (free call from a landline) and have them test your line and router. Also ask them to reset your port. Once done, please switch off your router for no less than 30 minutes then back on. Please keep us updated."

but i had contacted telkom to test my line first and recreate my port. and no reguard for the fact that cybersmart and mtn business runs 100%, both uncapped accounts not capped.

then got the next standard msg:

I have changed your routing profile. Kindly try again in the morning and provide feedback.

six hours after this msg were received, at around 00.30 my internet was running at 425kbps but very unstable. tested it against cybersmart again and it was rock solid yet ow was anything from 118-450kbps from one moment to the next.

yet cybermart and mtn business stayed rock solid at 425kbps+ all the time.

the CPA laywer will have to sort this one out as im tired of this sheet...

This hop is on your router or internal hardware. It is too high.

Please have this looked at.

So lets try something new today in helping MrBEEP & Co see where the issue is ;).

First off when posting about bad speeds post your location eg: Cape Town, Durban, JHB you get the drift. Second do the tracert to find out which network you are on, so if you are on IS which we all suspect to be the problem run the IS speedtest: http://speedtest-rba.isdsl.net/ and post your results. My suspicion is that you will see sub 56k speeds on that speedtest hence indicating a big issue. Now whenever I phone Telkom to get my line checked they have me run their own speedtest: http://capetown.spdtst.saix.net/ and give them the results. Now 9 times out of 10 when I have done this with my OW account the IS network is dead while the Telkom speedtest shows full line speed, therefore indicating the issue is not with my Telkom line.

If we can all do this maybe we can prove once & for all that the issue is with IS/OW & not our Telkom landline?

/if this did not make sense my apologies gotta run off to work...

I've had several different packages with OW because of the same issues experienced by most of the users and it seems that each package has it's own characteristics... My personal experiences are as follows:

4mb "Gamers" account : browsing speed during the day is dead, but 80%-100% line speed after hours (8pm+)
2mb Gold account : browsing dead during office hours, but more stable speeds after hours (5pm+)
4mb All day uncapped : browsing at 50% speed, but downloads hardly ever reach 4mbps.

So I experienced different shaping and results for each account and for now, it looks like I have to find the right balance between browsing and download speeds.

Unfortunately speedtest does not tell you the whole story.

By nature it uses a download to 'test' speed. As downloads and similar are shaped, the result you will receive will be the speed of your shaped downloads.

We have had this debate before. Should we follow the other ISP's and prioritise speedtest? The resounding decision was NO.

Using the SAIX speedtest and then using the IS speedtest shows nothing really. You are just using two different speedtest servers to download a file from.

It is like using Facebook and then using Google Plus.

I do know that the SAIX speedtest server uses more update technology, so would probably be faster.

So lets try something new today in helping MrBEEP & Co see where the issue is ;).
