My problems seem to have snuck back during the day. Tried to download a file in my browser earlier, after one hour it had done 40mb. Now I'm trying to update Minecraft. 0.09kb/s.

Have you considered the possibility of the problem lying with your machine\internal network\firewall?
I had a simular issue a while back, solved now.
I did:

Change the size of my internal broadcast domain from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.255.144(less arp's everywhere)
Changed my IP address allocations from DHCP to static, thus eliminating the possibility of multiple DHCP servers.
Put my machine in DMZ eliminating routerbased firewall entirely(running Zone Alarm as AV & Firewall on my machine, and full control of what apps can access the internet from my machine.
Optimised my network interface(lazyness cause me to use TCP optimiser- worked well)

Also if you are curious, go to task manager -> Preformance Click on Resource Manager, and then go to Network. It'll give you a nice idea of which processes are using the network interface, and the amount of network bandwidth they are hogging.

Also worth noting, none of this might work for you if you have a persistant Line issue, so make sure you're line isn't going past too many power sources etc, as this can cause electro magnetic interference.

Hope it helps, if not, we try again.

Well, both my backup accounts run fine and when the clock hit 5PM, my speeds started picking up again. I think it's shaping.

I wonder when Openweb are planning to reward their long term customers by dropping the prices of the Gold accounts.
I don't know how anyone can justify spending R329 on a 1Mbps Gold account when a 4Mbps "vanilla" account can now be had for R319.

Openweb?

Hi Hitokiri

Gold is a premium product.

We decided to rather lower contention ratios than decrease the pricing on this product. The cheaper a product is, the more people will be sharing the pipe and the lower priority that product gets on the network.

Gold will be kept at a high priority for best performance. Our Gold clients are used to great speeds, and reliability and we would like to keep it this way

If GOLD is too expensive for you, Openweb has cheaper options.

Today I got a call from Openweb to find out if my connection is fine or am I still having issues.

Told them its all fine now, thanks.

Stoked that they actually phoned to follow up.

Great service guys!

I am so envious of you guys, I have a 1Mb Gold uncapped on the IS backbone and if you want to browse the internet or try update a game file like Dota 2, i just forget about it, because i land up more annoyed.. i then have to use my FNB UNSHAPED account, and there we are, i can finally load web pages and update.

Then come 5am, i can load webpages on the openweb account, but just be patient. From 7pm, its full speed and running fast.
come 8am the next morning.. rinse and repeat.

Weekends, its full speed.

Seems like shaping to me and for R369 a month where i can basically only use internet after 5pm.. im getting abit pee'd off.
and im nearly a 1 year subscriber now, thats alot of patience for the experience as described above.. so i think i can let off alittle frustration.

PM MrBeep with the problem. He WILL solve it for you. Had the same issue earlier this week (think its on page 127) which he sorted for me.

Dude, those timeframes are exactly the same I'm experiencing! I've been monitoring it, and during the day I can forget about browsing most international sites, because they simply will not load or will take several minutes to load up. After 5 things pick up slightly, and then after 7 the account is fully usable again.

From 8-5, however, the account is pretty much useless for downloads or international browsing. It seems that if you're placed on the IS backbone, you're pretty much paying for an after-hours account with local access during the daytime. :(

If you need to download something urgently through the day on IS, you won't be able to because downloads are shaped to hell and back. The only option I have left is to go on the DSLHeaven backbone, and I don't want to go from unusable during the day to simply plain unusable. Not even the WebAfrica clients are happy with WebAfrica.

I really really wish VB would sort their crap out, because they are the best backbone to be on.

Or not.
Had the same problem, until I canceled and moved to afrihost, atleast now I can use my internet during the day.
Plus for 39 bucks for August 1mb it is win win.

Yeah, there's not really much MrBeep can do when this is an issue of IS shaping their accounts, which it very, very strongly resembles.

This is my experience with pretty much every IS product I've used yet. Absolutely horrendous daytime shaping.

Downloading via torrent or usenet, sure, you will get shaped. But there is no way they going to shape regular browsing. If browsing is slow, something is wrong somewhere.

I understand why would say shaping, but that is not what is supposed to happen. Check http://users.isdsl.net/ for your usage stats, does it say FULL ACCESS or RATE LIMITED. (You can check this regardless of time of day).

Ooh, nice site. Thanks for the link.

It says full access, so I dunno. The usage statistics is just very strange.

Total MB Used This Month - 23662.42 MB
Average MB Used Per Day - 11831.21 MB

On a 384 line? I'd be so lucky to get 11gb in one day on a 384 line. :p

Anyone that can provide feedback on the vanilla account? How bad are the shaping etc?
