Router Battery Backup

Here you go. But at R2,500 I might as well replace my UPS and/or camera.

I was actually thinking that it would be easier to find a 24V PoE camera at this stage. The converters are all quite pricey. Sucks that manufacturers have all these different standards that they use which makes it harder for us end users
 
The conversion from Active-> Passive is more popular so there's quite a few options there
Few camera manufacturers adopted passive,and the ones that did rather went 12v or added passive splitters to their packaging (most cameras run on 12v so they could add that directly without adding extra circuit overheads)

Add to that that Unifi does(did) their own thing for quite a while,including expecting the Pro models to be deployed in enterprise with Active PoE budgets,while their smaller UAPs etc used passive 12-24v except the AC Lite APs in newer revisions in fact support 12-24v passive AND active PoE so pretty decent prosumer hardware

I'll get a DC-DC step-up converter from eBay for R60 (free shipping) and feed a TP Link TL-POE150S PoE injector (802.3af compliant + Gigabit ethernet).
Total = R369

BotShop also has a suitable DC-DC step up converter but it's a bit of an overkill if one only needs 10 or 15W of PoE power. https://www.botshop.co.za/product/600w-step-up-boost-power-module/
Pity I bought the Tenda POE injector that takes 220V input. Probably cheaper getting the TP-Link and the step up to replace the Tenda. Mmm...
 
I have the same problem. Closest I could find is from Tycon Systems but it is pricey (some models are on Amazon).

Tycon has their own online store and my discussions with their online rep indicate that they are willing to ship directly to South Africa.

48V is the POE standar
I threw out my ancient alarm power supply, then used a Sherlo 6.4A charger with an 18AH battery which fits inside:

It has 6x1A 12V outputs which I use for:
- CPE
- Old Alarm (battery removed)
- 5V Converter: Router + SIP Phone
- Router
- Alarm beams + 5V Converter to PI Zero

It's pretty DIY, but one could use car chargers for the 5V supplies to keep the DIY to cutting off adapters and connecting wires.

My guess is that this should run for 6h.. just a guess, but the 2h load shedding shouldn't kill the battery too quickly.

I have 2x 9AH batteries. I should be able to wire them in parallel right? To make 18? Would that charge OK?

Should work fine if the batteries are identical.
Even mismatched batteries would work although one would end up working harder than the other.
 
Got my Ratel 430m today.
Much cleaner setup compared to my old open Sherlotronics 12v box + battery + home made dc cables
 
As an aside, it seems like most entry-level (600-1000VA) UPS units have an artificial limit of around 2 hours runtime. I saw one review on either an RCT or Mecer unit that one person was getting 2 hours runtime on the dot...

Had my first proper test last night with a small 650VA Mecer UPS. Battery was fully charged and I had minimal load on the unit. It turned off at the 2 hour mark. :oops: :crying:

This ain't too nice. Will have to find a way around it.

Double check the UPS settings in software. Can't confirm exactly how long my Mecer 2000VA UPS stays on, but i remember coming across settings that allow you to specify that you want the UPS to turn off after a specified amount of time (ie. not related to battery level). If you're getting exactly 2 hours every time then it is quite possible the UPS is set up to do so.
 
Looking at the Omipower Ratel 430m Micro DC-to-DC UPS to power a 9v router and a 12v Vumatel CPE/ONT during loadshedding - the specs lists the DC interface as :

DC Interface
Output Voltage (selectable) 5Vdc ; 9Vdc/12Vdc ;12VdcX4.

Is it possible to select 9v and 12v simultaneously on different ports or is it either the one or the other for all the ports then, and how many ports are there for DC ?

Exactly 2 hours. If it is a software setting, then it will probably be an issue, as these UPS are notorious for not remembering its "buzzer state" setting. But I will check that, thank you.

Kinda regret getting the Gizzu instead of the Ratel, but so we learn :)

I can at least confirm that the Gizzu does turn back on again if the unit is totally drained, and AC power returns. I was afraid that it would need to be physically turned back on again, but today's substation fault has removed all doubt.

I still love the little Gizzu, but I do need something a bit bigger as I have more kit running off it than initially anticipated. I'm patiently waiting for the Ratel 860p to become available at Communica...
 
Just ordered one myself!

Just a question, the cables from the battery to the devices, where do we get them from?
My mate said the unit comes with two DC cables included. I think the jacks are of 5.1mm diameter? You could always buy more from your friendly neighbourhood electronics store if you require.
