SEACOM downtime continues

So, is the only option now to purchase an account from WebAfrica? Is there any specific type of WA account that will guarantee intl access?

well tuesday would be the 3rd day

& as long as you buy saix it should be fine... just not I.S

well the normal pre paid R69.00 per gig is saix cos i could get int. access this morning fine with that but not on my uncapped thru I.S

I just bought a gig and am waiting for activation. I really hope they don't mess me around on this...

Let us know how it goes.

A friend informed me IS are busy implementing re-routing procedures. Too little too late I would say.

Good grief there is a hell of a difference between 6 hours and 3 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

What a pain in the ass - how do they have NO REDUNDANCY for this.
Afrihost is telling me that speeds may be impacted - I think that implies there is a fail over.
But since I can not so much as ping one of my servers there isnt any.
I am going to complain to afrihost. I can't see paying for uncapped local for today!

I just bought a couple gbs of unshaped from Web Africa, international access with full speeds 100%

Hi Guys,

Latest update is that the cable could be down until the 30th.

With regards to the redundancy question, and as to why there is so little redundancy and why speeds are impacted so much, here are the facts.

Bandwidth on SAT-3 is *VASTLY* more expensive than on SEACOM, and yeah, its feasible to put in backup capacity, at a cost. The market wants lower prices, but something has to be sacrificed to bring the prices down, and because of the insane price on SAT-3 its simply not economically viable to stay fully redundant.

All of us that have SEACOM capacity are suffering right now, TENET for example has dropped onto emergency redundant capacity, but at a fraction of the bandwidth we normally have available, its simply not economically sensible to do more than this. True redundancy will only really arrive when WACS on the west coast arrives (though it will be helped by other changes being made in the next few months from what I hear)

I'm in contact with SEACOM Noc constantly at the moment and I do know they are working with the SMW4 team as much as possible to get this done as fast as possible, but these things happen, not much anyone can do about it without spending sick amounts of money that would drive up the costs to all of you

Where I worked and jobs Ive held = I would have been fired same day this kind of failure with no redundancy transpired.

I'm sure it was a risk that was approved by the exco...otherwise yes, that dude is fired...

And to think how much we bitched when we just had Telkom. Is this any better? Get your act together, Seacom.

Downtime until the 30th is just NOT acceptable ..... and let me guess, not one head will roll for this debacle? Of course not.

Someone explain to me, how does routine maintenance of a couple of hours end up being a week?

So, do the isp's pay seacom for connectivity during the downtime?
