Spotify not working

BTW., it seems that the cause for this is that Spotify is actually trying to prevent non-US customers from accessing the streaming service via BGP filtering

There may be more problems in future, and those may affect other ISPs.

Having problems with Spotify and Telkom again. After the last time it came right after a week or two. But now its a problem again. If I use a VPN like Tunnel Bear it works. And I have a Premium account, so it's with both the free and Premium accounts.

Can someone explain what the point of Spotify is in SA? You have to jump through hoops, it's expensive and we have a number of local streaming services like Simfy and Deezer anyway.

I only recently discovered Deezer - it's brilliant!

Yea, between Deezer,Rdio and Simfy you can get pretty much a very close Spotify experience without any VPN hoops, plus the premium versions of these services are R60 p/m which is much cheaper than Spotify+VPN would cost you.

I've tried the other streaming services, but I really just much prefer Spotify. I like its user interface, with it's included band/artist bio's and related artists. So now the question is just how to get it working again. Just seems like Telkom ISP is the issue.

No, the issue is that Spotify is trying to prevent users from bypassing region-based controls.

The previous time it was fixed:
-I logged a fault with SAIX
-They responded that they had requested the preferred next-hop provider to troubleshoot, and the provider responded that Spotify had instructed them to filter Spotify's streaming IPs from non-European peers and customers.
-I requested SAIX to see if they could reach Spotify via a different next-hop provider, which they managed, which made it work again.

Most likely, Spotify has requested the same filtering from the current preferref provider for reaching Spotify.

I will follow up tomorrow with SAIX.

Other ISPs are maybe not affected as they use upstreams besides SAIX.

Maybe if we are to be split from Wholesale (as rumoured in today's story) we can also use non-SAIX upstreams, but it is probably a matter of time before other ISPs are impacted.

Of course, you are free to believe that nothing above is true, or you can understand that Spotify most likely has contractual obligations to at least put in some effort to curb users from violating the licensing terms of the music they offer, and if they don't comply with those obligations they will go put of business.

Why don't you guys just use Unotelly? Isn't that what everyone uses to access overseas streaming services?

$5 a month just for Spotify is steep.

So is Spotify itself compared to our local music streaming services like Simfy and Deezer though. If you also go the Netflix and Hulu Plus route, and also enjoy services like BBC iPlayer, then the Unotelly fee becomes less of an issue.

Spotify is basically free unless you're saving the files for offline use but I agree if you make use of services such as Netflix then Unotelly is really worth it.

Ah - thought you guys were talking about the paid version.

Are you aware that Deezer is also free to use? May as well a local service and not bother with DNS settings. And Deezer Premium is excellent value at R60pm. That's the equivalent of only $4.85.
