Telkom 512Kbps ADSL speed upgrades begin

Has your 512Kbps ADSL line been upgraded to 1Mbps?

imo 384 will forever b here for the lower income ppl that cant afford R150+ but still need internet, so if you want speed pay for it
 
This is a step in the right direction. It's a pity tho that the line rental is just about the same price as the data

I went from dial-up to 4Mbps in one step! That was a big WOW factor ;-)

Edit: I'm seriously thinking of downgrading from 4Mbps capped (legacy reasons) to 1Mbps uncapped (changing usage patterns). Once you get past the WOW factor, there is only so much I can do in a 24 hour day...

Time for me to downgrade for 4meg to 1meg!!! Already only using a 1meg uncapped 4meg is way to exp for private use.
 
2 of my remote sites have been upgraded from 512k to 1024k
The cost difference between 384k and 512/1024k is too big though, it needs to be revised.

I doubt it. It seems though it should because the difference in speed between 384 and 4096+ is far too large when comparing the price between 384 and 4096+.

If 284k is very close to cost, then 1024k shouldn't be far after it, and 4096 shouldn't be far after that either.

Does not help going from 512Kb/s to 1Mb/s if the fracking Telkom exchange has a 20:1 contention ratio and the telkom back hall links are overloaded.

I have a 4Mb/s link, in the mornings I get 3.5Mb/s and in the afternoon/evening it's slows to 200Kb/s - slower than 384Kb/s.

Initially I thought it was a shaping issue on MWEB uncapped.
I tried 2 other ISP's with Prepaid Unshapped and guess what - 3.5Mb/s in the morning and 200Kb/s in the afternoon/evening.
Turns out the links from Telkom exchange are overloaded

So don't expect to get 1Mb/s!
 
The Telkom rule of charging the ADSL user a normal line rental (on top of the ADSL line rental) is daylight robbery. I not even own a land line phone, but have to pay the R133,30 for something I never use just to have ADSL with Telkom!

In some cases a capped account works better than uncapped. I had 4mb uncapped with Afrihost, but after being throttled after downloading 20Gigs to ridiculously slow speeds (less than 100kbytes/sec), I switched to a 50GB capped account (basically the exact same price as the 4mb uncapped) but now I get full 400kbytes/sec download speed for all 50gigs!

Thank you for enlightening us all as to the current state of ADSL in SA. We were completely unaware...
 
maybe they should just skip the nonsense and go straight to 100mbps Fibre ;)

Don't we all wish that would happen! But imagine how much Telkom would charge for that.

And to everyone moaning here about 384 k speed, I think the profit per megabit of speed is much more for Telkom on these and until such a time users start upgrading on their own accord, Telkom will have no incentive to change this line speed sadly :(

Think of it this way...

Telkom charges R152 rent for 384 Kbps adsl line. That equates to R395 per mbps (R152/0.384).

Telkom charges R452 rent for 10 Mbps so that equates to R45 per Mbps (R452/10).

Thus per megabit of adsl speed being provided by Telkom, they are actually making R350 more per megabit on 384 Kbps than the 'up to 10 mbps' and this is why Telkom will never change it since most adsl subscribers are on this connection. Telkom changes other packages to try and entice users to change but in actual fact, they are happy if you remain on 384 Kbps.

Just to add to my statement. This only considers cash flow. Profit ratio will be even higher as I assume it costs less to provide a 384 kb circuit as oppose to a 10 mb circuit.
 
Do you guys think they'll eventually upgrade us "plebs" on 384Kbps to 512Kbps????

Per my previous 2 posts above, Telkom has no incentive to upgrade 384 Kbps users since the profit margin is so high and most residential subscribers use this speed. I can't see it happening anytime soon unless miraculously all home users suddenly subscribe to the 1 Mbps service and then Telkom will make that the entry level an create a new 'mid-tier' package. This is all pipe dreams though. lol
 
and also please upgrade "plebs" like us..on 384kbps to 512kbps...
