Telkom 512Kbps ADSL speed upgrades begin

Has your 512Kbps ADSL line been upgraded to 1Mbps?

Ah indeed. I didn't think about this factor :/
I am currently using a high cap range of products varying from Incredible Connect (who use Cybersmart b/w), Cybersmart, FNB Connect, Cell C (When I'm away from home, no signal otherwise) and Afrihost. It's a mission because uncapped isn't really affordable at 4mb speeds (My dad also can't understand why I download so much every month and I don't know how to explain it)

Granted they have their strange ways of doing business but I am still a faithful Cybersmart client.

Down Graded from 512 - 384 Mweb All Inclusive, seems Mweb never changed Line to 384 with Telkom, but is Shaping it down to 384..
Anyway Billion 7401VGP Syncing Happily:
Upstream 512000
Downstream 1024000

You pay for ENTRY LEVEL ADSL, and that is what you get.

The fact that those polls were done by mainly tech or gamer type people also came to mind, but though that it could give at least some indication of what the real statistics are.

The overwhelming majority of ADSL users are on 384. Remember that there are thousands of moms 'n pops out there that converted from dial up to ADSL....
 
even if they upgrade 384k some people will not be able to get much better line speed anyway and telkom will get tons of complaints of not being able to sync to 1 meg +

Most of 512ks were people who could get 1 meg or higher but didnt want to pay the R90 extra for some reason or the exchange was locked to 512k or lower

Exchanges cannot be locked.... it has to do with the DSLAM's capabilities - they can all do up to 4096. The newer ones are ADSL2+ ready and can reach speeds in excess of 4096 as long as it it connected to the cloud via metro-ethernet.

Our line was upgraded a couple of days ago. Called MWeb to upgrade and my word...the difference those extra 512Kbps makes is immense. For once I remotely feel like I have broadband. It could be faster, but at least now it could be significantly slower :D

I've personally converted approximately 100 people in my area and otherwise from dial-up to ADSL. They all rejoice when they get the upgrade and they are plenty happy with 384, so this is what causes for the majority in 384.

Very few (not more than 10) of the 100 people I've converted have asked for faster but all went straight to 4/10meg and not 512k.

They talk about the WOW factor... from 384 to 1024 and then from 4096 to 10240. All the other jumps do not have that WOW factor, eg. 384 to 512 or 512 to 1024.


/obviously if you jump from 512 to 10240, etc. but they refer to smaller jumps.
