Browsing the Oz papers this morning I came across this:
iPhone not so multimedia friendly

Asher Moses

Most of the TV, movie and other multimedia content offered by Optus, Vodafone and Telstra over their 3G networks is not available on the iPhone.

The iPhone 3G, which debuted around the world on Friday, is being billed as the ultimate multimedia handset and one of the main benefits of upgrading to a 3G service is the ability to access a range of content provided by the carriers.

However, most of this is not available on the iPhone due to incompatibilities with the device, the carriers said.

...more
.

Wonder what the position is locally?

Very much doubt that will be the case...

Vodacom didn't get the Iphone 2.5g and it was available in this country, and I don't see everyone owning one.

By available you mean? Any Service Providers have it? Nope.

I think he means the Apple Store in Sandton, which now has the old iPhone in stock (for R6999)

Are you sure that's not the iPod Touch? I think it rather unlikely that an accredited Apple product reseller would sell the (old) Apple iPhone at present as they'd effectively be encouraging users to jailbreak the phones in order to use them on SA networks...

That's what I saw. They had iPhone Bluetooth Headsets for R1999, and then I asked - do you have the iPhone? He said yes, R6999...I said I assume that's the old one right? He said yes, the new one was only released yesterday (Fri 11th July).

Perhaps they are selling it unlocked, as effectively - the iPhone 1 locking contract with AT&T ended when the iPhone 3G was launched.

Wheres the Apple store again in Sandton?
They dont have a store lol!! They have a new empty shop with a little stock.
At the sidewalk sale last week they had a table outside with a few printers and iPods.

The cellucity bit was there this time last year. I did a podcast on that with the owner and he said that they would take it down. If they cant get that right, I am not too sure I would trust them with a contract.

iPhone dealbreakers

iPhone dealbreakers (from engadget)

  1. Easily-replaceable battery -- especially being that 3G is much more demanding on battery power than EDGE data. We haven't popped the back off, but even if replacing the battery were as simple as unscrewing the two screws at the bottom (and it's not), that's still not what we'd call easily replaceable.
  2. Copy / paste. As if we even needed to mention this.
  3. Networked locked. What if I am oversees and I want to use a different operator?
  4. MMS. Ditto.
  5. Use as 3G modem from PC
  6. Expandable memory still isn't in the cards (har). 8 and 16GB capacities are very decent, but the ability to go further with microSDHC would be welcomed by many. As would be a 32GB model.
  7. A2DP (stereo Bluetooth). If this was an unlikely addition before, it's all but written off now. A2DP is a notorious battery hog on devices like cellphones, and the iPhone is already pushing the limits on power conservation and efficiency. It pains us to say it, but we just don't see A2DP happening any time soon.
  8. Push Gmail. Hey, if Helio can have it on the Ocean, and Samsung on the Instinct, why is Apple stuck with only push Yahoo mail?
  9. Service-independent device to machine wireless syncing. Exchange and MobileMe are nice, but even nicer would be a way to easily sync data directly to your machine without having to pay or have some kind of service.
  10. Tethered data. Hey, you're paying $30 a month for data (likely more if you're using it outside the US), your laptop should be able to use some of it too.
  11. No way to open a link in a new tab in mobile Safari. We also wish the browser was still a bit better about caching data, too -- it'd be nice not to have to do so many reloads when switching between tabs or moving back and forward through history.
