But I thought when the black market importers were buying the first iPhone for $599 or whatever that it was without contracts - and that steve said "twice as fast, half the price"

Yes but it was a bricked iPhone you had to activate it with iTunes at home but Apple will be putting an end to this it seems.
The iPhone1 was $399 directly from Apple but the black market traders added another $100 for those who could not purchase it from the US Apple store directly (non US residents).

So the black market traders will probably be adding $200 now since there is no alternative but to take out a contract or prepaid agreement.

How will they get it though since it has to be activated in store?

lol it's the "black market" they can get hold of anything :p

...but seriously I don't know either, if they do get hold of them I doubt it will be cheaper than the prepaid options we'll have here.(by much at least)

Looks like like news24 has its story wrong as well.

"Apple will sell iPhone 3G models in the United States for $199 and $299, depending on memory capacity. The original eight-gigabyte iPhone was priced at $600 when it debuted in June last year."

Tip.

If you connect pin3 and 7 of the charger port to the red and black wire of a PC power supply you will no longer have to pay for any calls.People will not see you carrying one and they won't wonder why you would pay tomorrows money for yesterdays technology.

A win win situation, is there a prize for best tip ?

Looks like people are indeed only paying $199 for the iPhone without a contract and asked to activate when they get home since Apple's activation servers are down, now is the time to get one!

This is just a rumour btw but the activation servers are down.

They are partly activated by the Staff at stores according to the /. writeup.
The phones are still locked and useless without the activation.

Apple will no doubt fix their servers by tomorrow.

I spoke to an MTN outlet in Lonehill, The guy there said that MTN will be selling the iPhone 3g come end of July. Can anyone confirm this? I initially thought it was only Vodacom? He didn't even flinch.

A couple of points:

1. MTN is not going to cell the iPhone 3g any time soon. If someone tells you that, they are lying / ill informed.

2. Activation and signing a contract are independent of each other. Both in the US and in SA you can sign a contract, and even see the first payment go off your account, before receiving your phone. Have you ever got a contract with a phone that was in stock, but not at the store where you where at? I have - what happens is you sign the contract etc, and then they courier the phone to you / let you know when it's ready for collection. With the activation servers being down, people have still been signing contracts and handing over account information, having credit checks, etc. Activation servers being down does not equal contract free phones. AT&T is not that stupid. Apple is *definitely* not that stupid.
