The Official 3G Iphone Thread

Man this thread is confusing and informative
People are speculating that they will only release it in September here but I personally think it will be end of July.
I mean do you think Vodacom would put the iPhone Pre-booking on 2 months before they release it unless they don't even know when they are going to finish signing a deal with Apple

Does anyone know whether Vodacom will sell this handset outright?

I am contemplating whether to buy it when it comes out here on Friday - it's $729 (R5 300) to buy it locked on prepaid which is a bit harsh.

Interesting to see the way its all unfolding in other countries, if you are not aware of the controversy over pricing in Canada (and Sweden I believe) then do yourself a favour and google it.

Bottom line: in Canada the deal is not a sweet one and they want a 3 year contract for the iPhone.
Peeps have got unhinged over this and petitioned Apple to do something about it...
(as an aside: I have no doubt that our carrier would be super keen on the 3 year deal, none whatsoever.)
BUT! if this: http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.co...gers-falling-out-a-story-too-good-to-be-true/
...is true then I am mighty, mighty impressed with Apple and will consider replacing all of my hardware over time with their stuff.
This is no small statement, I have posted in the past about my scorn for Apple and their advertising methods but if this is true and results in a drop in price and a sweeter/fairer contract agreement then not only is it their best marketing move yet but they will have won over at least one hardened cynic.

Seriously - just imagine a company who will step up and flex some brawn on your behalf in order to ensure that you don't either get ripped off or have to go without! Obviously looking after their own interests as well but I am getting all warm and fuzzy thinking about it!

Then again: the URL does actually contain the words "too good to be true" :-/

How can you guys expect a 3G 8GB iPhone to sell for $199 when a 8GB iPod sells for $299....

OMG! ...how is it that you don't get this: BECAUSE IT IS LINKED TO A 24 MONTH CONTRACT FFS!

How do you expect to get a Sony Erriccsen FOR NOTHING when it costs R2k - R3k ?

 take a hike mike...

Because Apple have said so?? The Ipod is a rip off and the guys charge what they like here

Its the same thing but this iPod can make calls and use 3G... surely that will make it more, right?

I hear what you are saying however never before has the CEO said that the price will be such and such and no one in the world will be allowed to sell above that price. That was never done with the IPOD but I take what you are saying that you are getting more with the IPHONE

You are both missing the point: $199 is subsidised by a monthly payment over an agreed period of time... an iPod is a once off purchase... how is this not sinking in?:confused:

Ok im not AKC buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I think ill have one tomorrow:o

I understand that but that is not what Steve Jobs said. Do you get it now?

OMG!
