The Official 3G Iphone Thread

I spoke to an MTN outlet in Lonehill, The guy there said that MTN will be selling the iPhone 3g come end of July. Can anyone confirm this? I initially thought it was only Vodacom? He didn't even flinch.

Spoke to Vodacom PR and though they are still under an NDA, they are sure it's theirs exclusively. If it does come out on MTN it will come later as they have more stringent testing procedures.

Spoke to the owner of a vodacomshop last week and he said that they don't know when but they do know they are suppose to be getting it soon-ish....

When asked how long soon-ish refers to he said anything from 4 weeks to 16 weeks :(

i hear its being launched by vodacom at vodaworld only this fri and in the stores by the end of the month

How good are your souces? I'm not dissing you, but you would think that Vodacom would have been singing this from every rooftop (ok, every Vodashop) that they would be launching the iPhone 3G at the end of July 2008.

Another question, but specifically related to the iPhone: can I download files off the 'net (by clicking on a hyperlink) using the iPhone (1st and 2nd gen)?

Nope not that i know of?!? How would you open the file after you download it anway? Have no File/folder explorer type program and have no access to the filesystem.
I'm not talking about jailbraking & installing unofficial apps. In standard form NO. Yes iphone sux

EDIT: This is stupid though! What is Steve thinking? PPl dont need to open/download things? Goes with his logic of ppl dont need to copy & paste things, what a pophol!

I was thinking of downloading a file to the iPhone, and then using the Diskaid utility, transfer the file to my PC for use. See here: http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/

And no, it's not stupid.

If you jailbreak the iPhone then you'll be able to download files to your iPhone and access them in various ways... for PC you can just use iPhoneBrowser to copy files over onto your PC but you need to jailbreak your iPhone first for it to access your iPhone.

Of cause its stupid!! Ever heard of a flash disk? You can put data on it download/upload onto it and access the file system without JAILBREAKING it!!

EDIT: We are talking about Apple backwards devices here so maybe i should use a FLOPPY disk as an example and not something as ADVANCED as a flashdisk!

You can download an app from a website (if you know the link). You would have to FTP the app into the iPhone and change permissions.

What I do is before I restore my iPhone, I backup my software using FTP. Then after the restore I copy them back to the iPhone.

FYI - Im using a mac, actually a Hackintosh

Google is your friend regarding pricing. EVERYONE seem to only read the first line, read the paragraph below and read the part in bold. Almost all my friends, stops reading after the first sentence and go "oh it only costs $199"...WRONG.

Apple says that the $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) prices will be maximums in almost all of the countries in which it is offered; however, these prices represent carrier-locked prices, based upon a commitment to pay recurring voice and data fees for 18 or more months (effectively doubling the price over the period of ownership).

And some more direct stuff

The iPhone 3G costs more than $199. That appealing under-$200 price tag is featured prominently in many of Apple's ads, but for most people, it's pleasant fiction. That entry fee is only for new subscribers who sign up for a two-year contract, and even then, there's an additional "upgrade fee"; if you want to get picky, it's really $217. The pricing is fairly complicated, but the bottom line is that a new 16GB model could conceivably cost you as much as $699. See our iPhone pricing story for phone and service specifics. Speaking of more money: This is a high-end smartphone and your monthly bills will reflect that.

If you want your iPhone on July 11, AT&T says you'll have to sign up for a two-year contract. But "in the future," a prepaid option will be available – for $599.

So there you go. I'd guess R6000-R8000 for this phone. For that, i'd go for something different tbh.

In an email I received from Vodacom:

Dear <censored>

Thank you for your e-mail communication to Vodacom.

Please be advised there is no present estimated time of arrival on the Apple I -phone. If the handset is brought into Vodacom it will first undergo a testing phase which may take 3 to 7 weeks before the handset is launched on the network. We do know that the handset is estimated to launch in South Africa at the end of July 2008.

Should you have any further queries, please contact us via e-mail at [email protected]

Warm Regards

Popped into Vodacom Cresta today and they reckon it'll only be here September/October '08.

Very much doubt that will be the case...

Vodacom didn't get the Iphone 2.5g and it was available in this country, and I don't see everyone owning one.
