The Official 3G Iphone Thread

Went into my local Vodashop yesterday and asked them when they'll have the iPhone 3G in stock. Guy said "in 2 months time", so that makes it September. They don't have any idea on pricing and plans. Off topic - they also didn't know when they'll be getting the Nokia N96 as well.

When will Europe get the N96?

Can some one please tell me if possible how much would the iphonev2 go for in SA,Is there anyone in vodacom that can divulge such info secretly..lol

Went to another Vodashop over the weekend. The lady I spoke to seemed to be quite honest about Vodacom not informing them of further details about the iPhone like date, pricing et al. She said that she's been getting tons of questions about when and how much, but they (the Vodashops) don't know anything. I then told her that Vodacom should have released pricing information and should have been more proactive, like putting countdown timers in all of their Vodashops, or at least on their website.

I do not understand why everyone here is carrying on like this. Do you really think Vodascum will just give the phone away? They will probably offer the pricing on the Talk 500 or 1000. Wake up guys this is Vodascum

^^^^ What he said.

THere is no way you going to get the iPhone here for the rand equivalent of US$199 without a hefty contract attached to it.

New Zealand will be the first country to launch the 3 iPhone on the 11 July at 00:01. Wonder if SA will do the same....

No SA won't be doing the same.

We are not on the list of countries that will be releasing the phone on the 11th of July.

"THE CONTRACT WILL RUN FOR AS LONG AS YOUR DNA OR A TRACE OF IT EXISTS ON THIS EARTH" :o
"IT WILL COST AN UNPRONOUNCEABLE AMOUNT, YES THATS MORE THAN A GAZILLION"

Supreme speculation on iP prices

Supreme speculation*

Other ZAR
1 - AU 7.55
1 - UK 15.6
1 - US 7.85
1 - EUR 12.4

Country Capacity iPhone iTouch Diff. Diff. ZAR
AU 8GB 730 400 330 R 2,491.50
AU 16GB 850 500 350 R 2,642.50
UK 8GB 300 200 100 R 1,560.00
UK 16GB 360 270 90 R 1,404.00
US 8GB 600 300 300 R 2,355.00
US 16GB 700 400 300 R 2,355.00
FR 8GB 500 290 210 R 2,604.00
FR 16GB 570 380 190 R 2,356.00

I excluded the US pricing because SA is grouped with EU market, in business locales.

ZAR 8 GB R 2,483.50 + SA iPod Touch Price = ZA iPhone Price
ZAR 16 GB R 2,451.17 + SA iPod Touch Price = ZA iPhone Price

All these prices are for pre-paid, if that will be available as an option. Otherwise I am afraid to think of the contract plans. :(

Some more news, and YES it will be sold PREPAID by AT&T and other operators in the States. Apparently also sold that way in Australia
if you dig through the comments on /. However, it will still be locked in, although in some countries such lock-ins are illegal (eg Australia).

"While the regular price of an iPhone is $199 if you take a 2-year contract with AT&T, if you're willing to pay a lot more you can get one without a contract. An article in InfoWorld mentions that 'Freedom will come with a price — $599 for an 8GB device and $699 for a 16GB — but this will mark the first time consumers in the United States are able to buy an iPhone without being tied down to a two-year contract. The phone probably would still be locked for use only on AT&T's network, said Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg. But buyers could choose a pay-as-you-go plan for voice service.' The question still remains, does it make any sense to pay that much for a phone that is still locked to AT&T's network even if you aren't bound to a contract?"

I think we should look at Vodafone pricing and not ATT.

How come you asking these silly questions. You will be one of the first to know.....;)

So then Apple lied? They said we could buy the phone for a said price. They did not say on condition of being locked into a contract for 2 yrs. Bunch of thieving swines the SP's are

<snip>

Lastly, on the importing cost above, you are charged Ad valorem duty on a mobile phone which is 7% fact. You will pay 14% and your shipping cost can vary between R 50-R200 depending on your weight, it is most definately 40% as stated.

You mean, it is most definitely NOT 40% as stated, right?

Actually you can see the fine print on one of their web pages.

http://www.apple.com/iphone/

Look at the conditions next to the first asterisk.

" * Comparisons between iPhone 3G (8GB) and first-generation iPhone (8GB) running on EDGE. Actual speeds vary by site conditions. Requires new two-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately to qualified customers."

A reminder to everyone that at the Apple Conference Steve Jobs said that the iPhone would be available at $199 ALMOST anywhere in the world. He never said it would sell at exactly that price in every single country.
