And July 11th is not for us.

Don't expect the iPhone anytime before I reckon September or October in this country.... and even that might be optimistic.

JUST TO CLEAR THINGS UP !!!

I have a friend in USA and a brother in Australia who will be sending me iphones to sell. I have been selling Apple Macs for a while now and the iphone will be no different. We get ripped off with pricing in this country by the idiots who run it. The problem with us South Africans is we b1tch and moan like babies and do nothing about it.

If you dont believe that an iphone can be sold for R3500 to R4000 in this country, then move along and enjoy your life. Others will buy.

Keep a lookout for pricing soon at my blog: http://www.iphone3g.co.za

Im Out

Hi Shardie

I've got two questions for you:

1. What's the cash price (IE non contract) for an iPhone 3g 8gb or 16gb in the US?

2. What's the cash price (IE non contract) for an iPhone 3g 8gb or 16gb in Australia?

If you can answer these questions, then you will A) get a lot more respect here and B) you have inside information that you should really forward to macrumors / engadget / gizmodo / appleinsider / tuaw or any number of mac rumor sites :D

If you don't understand the importance of these questions.... well, then you deserve some of the flak you are getting.

EF U Rendier . You dont know who I am and how I will be getting the phones. If you dont believe the pricing them move along and dont buy one. You need to get a life.

I have sold more than 30 of the original iPhones in South Africa so please don't pull the "I have insiders" line on me.

Secondly the iPhone 3G, unlike the original iPhone, will be sold with a contract you have to sign for and pay monthly. That adds up to alot more than the original iPhone cost.

So when you and your family member gets the rude awakening that it's not gonna be as cheap as you hoped and as easy as you thought then drop me a message here saying "You were right Rendier"

Let's be VERRRRY optimistic and say you can sell it for the price you said. what about customs? what about insurance and shipping for those items?

Customs alone charges 40% on electronics so unless you bring it in illegally I can't imagine how you will be able to get it so cheaply...

Here lets turn to the maths...

$199 for the phone

$20 a month for the contract for 2 years ($20 being a joke of course seeing that it will never be that cheap) = $240

Here are links to what the ppl think it might work out a month on contract:

http://www.macworld.com/article/133872/2008/06/fasternotcheaper.html

http://gizmodo.com/5015540/iphone-3gs-true-price-compared

Shipping: $60 via USPS Global Express

Insurance: $30

= $529 * R8.07 = R4269

Customs = 40% = R1707

Total cost = R5975

Let's say Customs doesn't hit you by what ever means... then you still want to tell me you going to sell the iphone at a loss of R769 to us. LOL.... yeah right bud... whatever.

Please bro... rather go post your stuff on bid or buy because over here we aren't clueless.

"As I pointed out last week, nothing is free and the "cheaper" price of the iPhone is off-set by a higher data service plan. Basically you're still paying $400 for your iPhone but you're paying the other $200 on a monthly payment plan since AT&T has raised the data plan from $20 to $30.
So the 3G iPhone really isn't cheaper by any means. In fact, it's more expensive because that extra $10 per month means that you've paid an extra $240 at the end of two years! Yes, instead of paying $400 for the phone, you're now paying $440!

Talk about deception! Shame on AT&T and Apple for trying to sneak that one past savvy consumers."

See now you know what Vodascum will probably do..

marine1 : You do realise the old Iphone could only transfer at Edge speeds whereas the new Iphone can do HSDPA (being at least 1.8mbps) so only getting charged an extra 10$ for an unlimited data plan when one can do alot more data transfers in a month is not a bad deal if you ask me.

Plus this lil article does not take into account inflation over those 2 years or anything like that... (granted inflation in the states is a miniscule figure compared to here, but it will change the end value of the phone)... which would you rather do, pay R2400 up front or pay R100 a month for the next 2 years?

First US pay as you go pricing I've seen:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ne_3g_plans_8_a_m_launch_time_on_july_11.html

"In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB)."

Otherwise, UK pricing:

http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipod-itunes/news/index.cfm?newsid=21803

"If the information turns out to be accurate, it seems iPhone users who don't want to be saddled with a contract will be able to buy an 8GB iPhone as a Pay and Go option for £300, while the higher-capacity 16GB model will cost £400. "

8gb:
US: 599.00 USD = 4,742.34 ZAR
UK: 300.00 GBP = 4,730.13 ZAR

16gb
US: 699.00 USD = 5,528.07 ZAR
400.00 GBP = 6,311.96 ZAR

Now, neither of these are officially official sources, so it could turn out to be wrong. And I think SA pricing, on pay as you go, will be a bit higher. But overall, I think this is pretty fair pricing for a phone with these specs.

I really think that is not a bad price, after all it is a touch screen phone with HSDPA. I will definately be getting myself one.

AUSTRALIAN iPHONE PRICING REVEALED

Australian iPhone pricing:

Mobile carrier Optus has announced iPhone 3G pricing and plans in Australia. Optus is offering both pre-paid and traditional post-paid plans.

The pre-paid price for the iPhone is $729 (8GB) and $849 (16GB) and allows you to sign up as needed without need for a long term contract. Pricing appears to start at $30 per "recharge" but without data service. 50MB is included in the $40 Turbo Cap pricing. Full details are available at Optus.
source: http://www.macrumors.com/

That makes it in the region of R5500 for the 8gb on prepaid.

Went into my local Vodashop yesterday and asked them when they'll have the iPhone 3G in stock. Guy said "in 2 months time", so that makes it September. They don't have any idea on pricing and plans. Off topic - they also didn't know when they'll be getting the Nokia N96 as well.
