ya, it is knid of funny that he said that. and while the prev. iphone sold for 399 without contract, and as he promises half the price, this should also sell for half the price without a contract, ie. $199~!!!

not common of Apple to Lie like that, i am disgusted about this, i hope they get sued!

How do you get those figures if Steve Jobs said it wouldn't be more than $199 worldwide?

You can suck your thumb and the number will pop into your head.

but i think it was an informative guess.

It'll definitely be with a contract, the pay in'll just be less than $199. The other phone was supposed to be with a contract as it was locked, they just didn't force you to activate it.

I know but what I'm saying is that as it was locked to AT&T from Apple's perspective you couldn't use it on any other network and so basically had to take out a contract, unless you just wanted to use it as an ipod.

how could it be that this new iPhone actually costs MORE?

$399(the price of the prev. iphone should be the limit, it should go for 3000/4000 for the 8g and 4k/5k for the 16g, MAX!

Yeah, I heard what Steve Jobs said - I've watched every Apple Keynote for the last five years, and, as much as I love Apple, I can tell you this much - they aren't perfect :D It wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being less than $199 in every country, but maybe only on the biggest contracts. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up being higher either :(

Furthermore, even looking at legitimate costs (ie, selling it at a fair price in SA) the SA market is smaller, and more difficult to deal with (in some ways) than the US market - hence the higher pricing.

RE the whole "On contract, not on contract thing". Although it wasn't forced on you, the implication with the original iPhone was that it was $399, and you could use it either:

A) on an AT&T contract
B) on an AT&T Pay as you go sim
C) as a paperweight.

Now, for options A) and C) it's half the price and has the same constraints (on a practical level), option B) has fallen away, so what Stevo said was correct. Option D) (I'm a leet hacksaw and I'm cracking my phone, which is my personal fav :D) was never an Apple sanctioned option.

One more interesting thing - was talking to my brother, his cancellation fee for his AT&T contract is $175.... now, I'm not sure if you get to keep the phone or don't, but if you can, that would mean cash price in the US is less than $400, which I'm super happy with :D

My media communications contacts at Vodacom and Apple were both under lock and key because of non-disclosure agreements, so still no official word yet from them. This means that what we know is still pretty much an educated guess. However, their comment to me was 'call back in a week and we might be able to help', so maybe my next Toys and Technology podcast will have all the details.

Is it possible to import it from where ever for $199?

$199 is how much you'll have to pay in when you take out the contract. The IPhone 3G will probably work out more expensive if you have to include the monthly payments for the contract.

T-Mobile to Sell 3G iPhone for 1 Euro

T-Mobile to Sell 3G iPhone for 1 Euro
Deutsche Telekom AG's (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) T-Mobile will sell Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) new iPhone for as little as 1 euro ($1.54) for the 8-gigabyte version together with a 69 euro monthly contract, it said on Monday.

Apple is set to reach far more consumers with the launch of the 3G iPhone in 70 countries than it did with the original version a year ago, partly due to having abandoned its insistence that carriers give it a share of call revenue.

Operators such as T-Mobile now have more scope to subsidize the cost of the phone to buyers in return for more lucrative contracts.

Some carriers, including Telefonica's (TEF.MC: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) O2, have said iPhone users consume 30 times as much data as users of other Internet-enabled phones.

The original iPhones that went on sale a year ago cost hundreds of euros and were sold in conjunction with expensive, exclusive deals with a single carrier in each country. Six million of the handsets were sold.

T-Mobile will sell the 3G iPhone with 8 gigabytes of memory, enough to store about 2,000 songs or 8 feature-length movies, for between 1 and 169.95 euros, depending on the data plan.

The 16-gigabyte version will start at 19.95 euros with an all-inclusive data plan costing 89 euros per month, going up to 249.95 euros for a minimal 29 euros-per-month contract.
