Rendier, thank you for your quick and snappy come back. I DID read the threads - and all i see is alot of speculation.

And please dont explain, rather use your valuable time to go make some coffee and RELAX!

It's not speculation. The iPhone costs USD199 on contract in the US. Some countries have made the contracts very expensive (like Rogers in Canada). We are all very relaxed :)

Heres the breakdown of the iPhone price in the US.
$199 - iPhone
$350 - Break Contract
$36 - Activation
Approx $50 - Shipping per phone
R200 - Customs (debatable)
SUB TOTAL: $599 = R4672.20 (exchange rate @ 7.8)
ADD R200 for Customs

TOTAL : R4872.20

Now you can add a few more Rands for unforeseen extras.
Unlocking Price : Free if you know how to do it and get it off the net.

The rest is PROFIT

Rendier you were right (lets all pat Rendier on his back), the iPhone cannot be sold for less than R4000.

I am amazed. Can I tell you why? The "Apple Platinum Store" in Sandton is selling the old 2g iPhone. Cool, unlocked iPhones.

"Sorry, if I upgrade this to the 2.0 software this afternoon, will it still be unlock"

"NO" says apple support bar man.

*Confused* So it's not an officially unlocked iPhone? But it is being sold in an Apple shop (or rather one of Core's Official Apple Distributers)

what does "locked" mean. Say im from MTN - does the phone have to be unlocked? And if im from Vodacom - then obviously not? Or has it got to do with software etc. Apologize if im a bit blonde here.

There is no way to have an officially unlocked iPhone 2G in SA unless you are roaming... must be pwned.

Locked means the phone is "locked" to a certain network. Currently, all apple iPhone sold in America are locked to AT&T. To unlock it, you have to install special software (there are mutliple kinds and ways) and then it will work on any network.

So yes, to use the locally released version of the iPhone 3G - you will most likely have to use unlocking software to make it work on MTN. This is quite debateable, because SA networks don't lock phones (generally) but they might be forced to by the contrat they signed with Vodafone and Apple. Who knows. We have to wait and see.

It's been jailbroken, but not unlocked. Basically useless as a phone in SA.

My understanding is that legislation prevents operators in SA from locking phones, so I am also very interested to see what happens with the iPhone.

What you fail to mention here is the crazy mark up the ppl ask. They stood in a queue for the iphone so they will charge an arm and a leg...

Just look at ebay prices...

$870 for the 8GB and $950 for the 16GB...

This is without shipping and customs and all the things you mentioned above.

Hi Rendier

Glad you got it working :D I'm interested - how did you unlock it? Or does it work fine on Vodacom because it's one of the approved carriers?

So far I've only seen Jailbreaks and SIM swap unlocks online, but no software unlock.

oh - otherwise RE the unlocked phones at Sandton - AFAIK Cool Apple Buddies (Sandton) is no longer affiliated with Core directly.....
