The Official 3G Iphone Thread

I thought the IPHONE 3G was being released on the 12th of september?

We've all been there: Somewhere, someone finds a date that may or may not be the release date. In due course we've all found at that "may not be" is the more likely scenario.

Neesh, God and Vodacom are the only entities that know for sure if and when the iPhone will finally be here. I've asked Vodacom, but they have a different answer every time...

Got a call from my local vodashop - they reckon I get my 3 iPhones in October :( Can someone just step up to the plate and put us out of our misery please!

Please let us have a report back on the contract plans and handset price and any other relevant tidbits we need to know about?

Same here, I have spore origins to occupy me and will be updating to 2.1 as soon as dev team cracks it :)

I don't think I want the 3G version anymore either.

OK gents...

As we all know the 2.1 software for the Iphone is out. Ready for download. Its a nice 231MB for the 2G version.

If you have pwnage your phone with software version 2.0.2 then you can go ahead and upgrade not restore your phone to the latest software.

I have just done it and its working perfect. I am busy doing some testing on the apps side and backups and battery life and will keep you guys posted.

Everything feels faster, the sms typing is quicker so far and I found out that if you now three times click on your headphones it goes to the previous song.

Super I am liking 2.1 oh yes the Edge icon has also changed.

enjoy 2G guys

Okay, so I've decided against the iPhone 3G. No, really. I've read about one and a half billion reviews (okay, probably twenty or so); and spoken to two very good friends who have iPhones in the UK. They assure me (and they know me, my phone needs and habits a bit) that I don't really want one. Oh, I've explained about the fact that the iPhone is pretty enough to lick, but they reckon I should steer clear.

Anyway, I don't want to get into an argument about the merits of the iPhone - especially not in the Official iPhone thread. BUT, I've decided to go for the Samsung Omnia i900. and again, I don't want to start a whole thing comparing the two.

What I DO want to point out, however, is that the i900 isn't available through Vodacom yet. And when I phoned to ask when I could get one, I got the same BS as I got when asking about the iPhone. Now with these two phones in a very similar market segment, don't you think it is a bit suspect that neither has been released locally, even though they've both been available in other markets for some time now?

I'm beginning to wonder if the two aren't connected in terms of marketing. Maybe Vodacom is holding back so that they have all the "offerings" (iPhone, HTC Touch Pro, i900) available at the same time? That way they could probably snag some subscribers into settling for something other than an iPhone - especially if stock is low on the Apple device.

Either that, or I've been reading too many conspiracy websites...

Vodacom should be offering the i900 shortly I would imagine. They did a piece on it in the latest copy of vodaworld magazine.

...and I saw a billboard advertising the Omnia around Jhb somewhere

sales dude at that electronics place in Sandton City (the one just between Sandton city and nelson Mandela square) told me Vodacom gave them a notice that the iPhone will only be available in January due to 3G issues ... can anyone else confirm this ...

but i also heard MTN on the 21st or 22nd of this month are bringing in a whole lot of new contracts and specials and the Samsung Omnia might be launched then ... can anyone confirm this also ...

the iStore at Clearwater Mall had a sign up stating "iPhone coming soon" so I popped in to ask when "soon" is - the bloke told me they're getting their demo models in 2 weeks time and claimed that it should go on sale about a week after that. Let's hope....

Lies! Lol... there was an issue, small issue, not relevant to most people and its been sorted, nothing to do with 3G.

Yip MTN got new contracts, heard they quite good, MTN 50 MTN 100 etc

well, ain't that interesting. This was the same shop that I popped into to ask about the iPhone, when the salesman also suggested the i900. But then he couldn't sell me either of them at the time!
