The Official 3G Iphone Thread

Ok so pardon me for being a little late to the game, been waiting for the price just like everyone else...

anyhow, visual voicemail / gps maps etc what exactly do we get from the iPhone 3g in the 3rd world...

Just a thought. I wonder how much of the world’s economic meltdown, can be attributed to the iPhone. I mean, how many of us are actually supposed to be working, and not whacking the ‘F5’ key through the keyboard?

Since I was mentioned in this thread I thought I'd drop by to clarify some of the information I have:

- The iPhone was launched to the media with a press function held on Tuesday (23 September). Despite publishing three articles in print and two online, while talking about the iPhone on 702 and ZA Tech Show, I was not invited :P Ag, I was out of town anyway. But many of my fellow journalists were there and got the "inside scoop" as well as phones to play with. I've been messing around with one this morning.

- The public launch is tonight at VodaWorld in Midrand. It kicks off at 9PM and stock of the iPhone should arrive at 12. If you want one on contract you need to take along payslips, etc. I'm not sure what exactly is planned, but I'll be asleep at the time.

- Vodacom had over 33000 people pre-ordering the iPhone via its online service, but only ordered 30000 devices as stock. Vodacom probably doesn't think everyone who pre-ordered would commit to purchasing, but I still get the feeling that the stock will all be gone by the weekend.

- Visual voicemail is not supported yet, but Vodacom has promised to get it up in the next six months.

- The GPS and Google Maps works very well, but obviously Google Maps coverage of SA is not very good, so as a navigation device it is not that useful... yet.

- All first generation iPhones and imported phones will now unlock in South Africa if officially updated through iTunes. This is what Vodacom has told us, but we have not tested it yet.

And, of course, we'll be discussing it all in episode 31 of the ZA Tech Show. Good luck to everyone trying to get an iPhone this week!

Visual voice mail and all other features should work. Except the Itunes store app on it

Hahaha, I completely agree. I can't seem to think about anything else except for how I can get the phone tonight!!

If this turns out to be true I might wet my pants.

I was goin but im havin second thoughts . How much stock do the really have? Im not stayin awake till like 5PM. You guys know that it will take really long. They gotta sign about 500 people up on contracts. Plus they gotta activate each phone which take about 3-4 mintes. You register it through i-tunes and hopefully the data server in Cali is not down  ...... Then there is going to be chaos

Got to agree with you on that one. Coupled with the idea of not having any clue what the pricing will be like. Yet, I still find my self strangely drawen to Midrand

for those peeps who are there, sure vodacom will make it worth their while ... launch only specials etc ... pretty sure of it ...

... If this is the case then Kudos to Vodacom because the software unlock is not out yet. And if they do that I can bring in locked iPhones and unlock it through them and sell it at R1000 cheaper :-)

Im loving this...

This unlocking issue is making alot of guys techno horny. lol. calm down guys. Take a cold shower or something.

Please remember that this has not been proven yet - and apparently it will only apply to first gen iPhones, not the 3G. Lets not make too much of it yet until everything is official.
