Nope they weren't electric in the 90s, I had a 97 model. It was the later models that had electric
 
Coincidentally I took my CityRover Style (aka Indica LXi) into the multi-franchise here in East London on Friday for its annual service (135,000 kms according to the service book, but the odometer was only on 126 418 kms as I was only clocking up around 10,000 kms a year on average - much less now since the pandemic kicked in).

Just did the spark plugs, oil filter and oil change (I supplied my own 5 litre container of semi-synthetic 5W40 oil, as I have also done previously for all the other annual services). As usual, the labour costs far outweighed the actual parts costs - R 388 ex VAT for them & a whopping 1.2 hours labour cost @ R 825 ex VAT - for a total invoice cost of R 1694.95 incl VAT.

I had checked the air filter last week, as it was replaced only a year ago at the last service - it was still OK & I used compressed air to blow off any residual dust on it - the service book says it only needs to be replaced at every 3rd service (or 60,000 kms) & the fuel filter at every 2nd service (or 30,000 kms).

5W40 is one of the most popular oils recommended by manufacturers, If we were to do a poll I would guess that most people would using it or it would be the one most recommended. Just because it work well in freezing conditions does not mean it's not good for us here.

I just looked this up on Shell's SA website, and it is the reccomended grade for Tata Indica's inSA. I didn't realise that 5W-40 was needed in SA, it works down to -30 degrees.

Indeed. Seems TATA recommends it as the base standard, but can be adjusted according to a country's climate.

Yes, it's also one of the recommended oils for a lot of Ford models, I personally know of the Duratec engines.
