I personally just encourage people to switch to KDE.
This "users are idiots, and are confused by functionality" mentality of Gnome is a disease. If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will use it. I don't use Gnome, because in striving to be simple, it has long since reached the point where it simply doesn't do what I need it to do.
Please, just tell people to use KDE.

Sorry.. Just had to share this with you :D

hmmm, that quote is two/three years old. Ubuntu and others have done a lot for gnome in the meantime.... but having said that... I do find I can do more with KDE.

I love Gnome long-time, it works perfectly fine for me. But I'd be willing to give KDE4 a shot. Does anyone have a Hardy Kubuntu installation CD for me?

whereabouts are you? I am in Joburg South / Alberton

And to be honest, I dont really have an issue with gnome. run both desktops, but yes.. prefer KDE.

me neither, me too :)

Three out of five of my computers actually prefer Gnome! :p The monkeys who operate them don't seem to mind either.

Yes, but they do tend to break stuff on KDE so I keep them on a strict gnome diet (or a knoppix disk in a glued shut drive inside a glued shut box for the FNG :D)

I used to only love KDE, for about 4/5 years then I just got sick and tired of this new transitonal phase. Started to find KDE too damn buggy, so I installed Gnome.

Ever since then, made every distro use Gnome again (even my new love Fedora). Although I like Gnome without the gnome in it.

Aka, KDE apps and KDE icon themes. Gnome that way is awesome!

Yes, Linus is very outspoken on several issues, including DE's.
:P

Interesting thing to note, we always measure a great programmer and Linux master by the DE or WM he uses, but here we have the heart behind Linux using KDE, what many other so called "masters" would scoff at as being a memory hog, bloated or whatever.

To be quite honest, I couldn't give a rat ass what Linus thinks of Gnome. Just the same as I could not care what Bill Gates thinks of Winamp

KDE4 is what pushed me to Gnome.

I have to agree KDE4 is cr@p, I think it will only be usable in a couple of years time. Until then I'll stick with Gnome;)

I've been using KDE4 for the last month or so, and I really find little wrong with it. There are some minor issues I have. But tbf it's just another DE for me that does what I want from it for 95%+ of the time.

True, KDE 4.0.X is a bit on the weak, ugly, useless, uninspiring side of things, but it seems like someone knocked some sense into the devs with the 4.1 release. I think we will be raving about KDE at around 4.3 again, but until then:
echo "kde-base\kde-meta-4.x" > /etc/portage/package.mask

What I have however found, and this is after testing each and every DE and WM out there I'm way more productive on KDE 3 than on any other environment.

So basically it boils down to being productive for me, set the eye-candy and what-not aside, and if you are productive on Gnome, then good for you, if you are productive on Fluxbox or Openbox, then your lying about other things as well.
:D:D:D

Only problem I have now is that almost no one develops anything for KDE3 any more, everyone is now KDE4 mad, making for less themes and apps and whatnot for KDE3...
:(

I work in Houghton, near Jhb General Hospital and Killarney Mall. I'll just grab it from a local mirror using a R12 Axxess voucher, thanks!
:D

*puts hand hup and say "I like gnome"* Ulimate edition 1.8 has so nice themes that works perfect with gnome therefor the uglyness of gnome isint a proplem. :)

That's because it's still full of bugs and all the KDE3 apps haven't been ported to KDE4 yet. I personally despise Gnome, I find KDE so much easier to use.
