Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

results form vodacom 3g router and incoming connections

i would like to find out if anyone has made any progress on getting incoming connections to work through their 3g router on vodacom service, while connected to internet vpn apn?

I solved this problem months ago when MTN enabled their unrestricted apn that does not require you to jump through hoops to setup.... and their HSDPA/3G/GPRS network actually seems functional, unlike Vodacom's which is down more often than not. Do yourselves a favour... just try MTN - I have no interest in either organization, it's just that it really made a huge difference in the ease of connecting and accomplishing the telemetry type data transfers we were doing.

Vodacom is taking so long to sort this out that with rapid pace of changing technology this will be completely irrelevant by the time they get it right. In any case, I strongly suspect that the real reason that they are dragging their feet is that they are terrified of the plethora of new cellphones and devices that can handle VOIP calls.

Firstly congratulations on this thread turning one year old! :) I should feel like a proud dad, but somehow I don't

More importantly, I'd like to go into a test phase with those of you who have already provisioned yourself on the 'unrestricted' apn.

Can you please check and test incoming connectivity and if all ports needed are open and let me know.

Looks promising so far. I started up emule (p2p software) and I got a HighId which means I had a routable IP and my machine accepted incoming connections. When I have time I will try testing hosting a web server.

goggaconnect & vodacom

I wonder ....

In another thread it was said that one can call 155 from any vodacom sim. It appears that goggaconnect uses vodacom sim's and are more than likely on the vodacom network.

Trying to get info out of goggaconnect is like getting blood out of a stone, so I'm wondering if it may be possible to make a call from the sim in my datacard to 155, ask them what the phone number is I'm calling from and if they can provision internetvpn for me?

Why not just send yourself an sms from your datacard to any other cellphone - that will also give you the number? Then you can call 155 and after a long wait  , you can ask them to provision internetvpn.

Agree on sending an SMS, easiest way to get your own number.

Why do you need the internetvpn apn?

We're going to become more 'strict' on provisioning this apn as well as the unrestricted apn.

These apn's have specialist applications and will be provided for those. But they require special management and we need to control this.

I'm more after unrestricted, I need 2-way udp communication for a VPN to work nicely.

At present it only works with tcp, which is pretty slow due to all the hand-shaking.

I see MTN now seems to allow VPNs on the normal internet apn. Vodacom should do the same. Paying R2 a meg we should not be restricted in what we can do at that price!

Normal ISPs do not see fit to mess with what ports one can use, while I understand at R2 a meg you would want to block incomming data, outgoing should be un-restricted.

AFAIK this it how it works on the normal APN. The Internetvpn APN gives you a routable IP and Unrestricted APN allows incoming connections

A normal user would use internet APN
A person connecting to a vpn would use the internetvpn APN and
If you hosting or need to make a connection to your pc for remote management you would use unrestricted APN.

Nothing outgoing is blocked.
