Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

Thank you 3G will try it tonight.

Now that it is up, do you see a performance difference between Unrestricted, Internet & Internet VPN?

Kind Regards

Just note that the guys might still be testing so it might yo-yo a bit.

Don't think you should see a performance difference, basically the same infrastructure. Actually the internet APN might be a bit better performing as it will have the in-line engines.

I couldn't ping my address and certain ports are blocked.

Latency wise! Considering that you are in a VPN or behind firewall infrastructure it might add a little bit of latency, so their might be small improvement but time will tell.

Thanx

Is the unrestrictedAPN officially 'live' then or not?
Testing when something is meant to be 'live' does not appear to be very professional....

Or has the unrestrictedAPN been launched as a best-effort service due to all the requests for it?

Please clarify V3G.

If anything IMO, the performance will probably decrease because of all the extra 'noise' that will now be occuring due to it being 'unrestricted'

Which of the 3 APNs are you talking about / referring / comparing here?

I can connect.........haven't tested 'open' incoming ports yet.

Okay ... I have activated Unrestricted APN in the Vodacom4me web site 2 weeks ago already. Since then I have tried at random intervals and it will not connect using the word "unrestricted" in the apn field.

The option to activate HAS disappeared from the services tab in Vodacom4me.

Today I read that you can connect using this APN but I tried again and NADA !!!

What gives? Is this working or not? What is the correct APN name??????

Please assist and clear up the confussssion here.

Nah ... I tried all the names I could think of and NADA !!!!

I have tried unsuccessfully the following apn names:
unrestricted
UNRESTRICTED
unrestrictedapn
unrestrictedAPN
unrestricted-apn
unrestricted-APN
unrestrictedvpn
unrestricted-vpn
hosting-apn (suggested by some guy at 155)

I think the real problem is that this APN is NOT live and NOT working yet. According to 155 whom I spoke to this morning that is the case.

For a topic/post that was started in November 2005 I cannot understand why it is 9 months later and this APN is still not live yet?

"unrestricted" works for me. I think they are still testing though. This morning name lookup failed.

I'm currently doing a port scan on the Vodacom connection and it seems as if only the most common ones like http, pop3, ftp etc. are open. You also can't ping the address.

Seems like Vodacom still believe we need unrestricted net-nappies :(.

Indeed, I've just spoken to the engineers and as with all things that seem easy upfront, something always catch you out.

Mobile network architectures were designed to be outgoing in nature, with multiple engines that load balance, etc. So it's not so easy to find the right path into the network to hit a specific node on the network.

Will keep you posted on how it goes.

I've been working on the APN for most of the morning, but it's not formally into production yet.

hhmmm...maybe they still testing like V3G indicated previously, analysis impact studies and such of said APN... :)

I would actually prefer that the new unrestricted APN is launched officially and you are told what can be expected and what not, and not that testing is still done while it is also live at the same time....

Maybe it is just my impression but it all seems a bit up in the air as to whether how it works, what the settings are, what you can expect, etc etc.

unrestricted should be just that IMO

edit:  V3G have mentioned above "it's not formally into production yet"

Yes, my mistake for posting above that I successfully connected, was meant more as an update.....

After 9 months it was a bit of an emotional moment for me to actually connect...
Lolz :D
In the heat of the moment one tends to be premature ... heh :)

Hope you gonna enjoy that Amstel tonight! ;)

Hope we're not discussing your 'problem' here :D

Only when this blasted apn is up. We've (all of us, forumites included) spent way to much time and effort on something that was supposed to be simple....

Indeed far too much time has been spent on something that is actually quite simple in theory. But I am sure changing an existing network to OPEN UP everything that has been plugged shut is probably very scary for Vodacom engineers. Still "when" it does launch it should be fully open, no port blockings whatsoever, no ghost proxies or any of that stuff or it's just a waste of time.

I have a number of applications which run on very strange and obscure ports for security reasons. Currently on Vodacom's network I am unable to access any of those things I always have to log into a server external to Voda's network to access these applications. Royal waste of time so please kick some ass for this unrestrictedAPN to go live and to be truly "unrestricted".

It will be completely open, so the first guy that complains here of being scanned is going to get virtually mugged.....

I'm being scanned all the time on the net, now I'm being mugged as well :D.

On your 3G connection?

If so, try and log your own IP plus the IP scanning you. I'd like to see any correlation.

From my understanding it should not be possible to be scanned, but I've seen some forumites complaining about this.
