Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

Anyone else noticed a general degradation in the last few weeks or so?

I'm starting to feel the home uncapped accounts are over subscribed. In the beginning buffering didn't exist, now its for every youtube video any time of the day, and I've only been throttled twice since starting in Jan.

Hi Joker,
this is same problem i was having and when they give you test account then everything works fine...
So i switch to business uncapped which is way more expensive and its 1mb .... it was worst then home uncapped..

i think we should start telling people to cancel there account and telling everyone on the forum ... that's the only way they understand what they doing its wrong and unethical.

My Youtube experience overall has been pretty good. It starts at linespeed (1Mbps) but later drops to around 80KB/s which is fine if it's a short video... longer vids have to buffer a lot more.

This has been my intl http experience though: http://testmy.net/CvYZSJl.png

WAJeff, if you were to add Home Uncapped to this table:
http://kb.webafrica.co.za/article/A...ctivity/ADSL/Bandwidth-Priority-Profiles.html

What would it look like out of interest? Best Effort for all the sections?

I'm not complaining, just trying to work out if I should get a 100GB Home account instead of Uncapped for my needs.

They mentioned it somewhere on the thread - the home uncapped -> Silver.
What speed are you on, Joker? With the home uncapped 1Mb package, you get 116GB (I worked the schedules out on a spreadsheet) maximum out of the account if you don't get break any of the windows.

I have also just realized on my account that the usage thing is completely inaccurate. It seems my 7 day limit was reset around yesterday or two days ago, but today I already have more than 7gb on my 7 day usage again. And I'm on a 384 line. I have also noticed that if you are over the 7 day usage limit, then they also limit your after hours speed. I have to reset my connection after hours to get a chance of actually going above 30KB/s.

They should also correctly word the 7 day usage thingy. Since it is actually 7 + (7 * 6 / 24) = 8.75 days before your usage gets reset. Since the timer stops when you have the Download Plus time.

Another thing I have noticed. This following part in their Uncapped Q & A ( http://kb.webafrica.co.za/article/AA-00833/33/Internet-Connectivity/ADSL/Home-Uncapped-Q-A.html )
50% of their normal speed during business hours
80% of their normal speed between 5pm and 10pm
100% of their normal speed between 10pm and 7am, including the whole weekend

Is completely false. As soon as you go over your 7 day limit. I basically get 50% of my line for the entire day. During download plus time I get about 80% if I reset my connection.

Haha, I mailed them back in January after the first week on WA to report that usage monitor is broken and this is the reply I got.

Our developers have managed to look into this and can confirm all to be in order with the spikes included in our initial response.

This being said, we can confirm that our usage tracker is accurately working.

WA is not concerned as it NEVER shows less than you actually use

Ok, now that I got more things into perspective I think this account has lost its value for me. why do I need to pay almost double of what im paying to get the same performance as opposed to a account that actually works 10 times better which is also 10 times cheaper.

It will cost me R1299 to get a account that will actually work for gaming while I can pay R450 for a account that gives me the same level of performance.

you lucky, that falls in your "uncapped" window.

Mine from last night, this kind of thing pops up about 3 or 4 times a week! They should raise the 7 Day Usage rolling window by a 1 gig to make up for this BS of STEALING our usage

I haven't managed to get that right yet :D

Another thing, if WA so clearly states what your usage limits for a week is, isn't that a capped account then? Sure, they're not cutting you off from your internet if you pass that limit, but they're still telling you how much you're allowed to use.

Probably. Technically no, since they're not "capping us", but honestly..... meh.

Just rather use openweb or mweb. At least they don't bully their clients...

So I've been testing and sending results from pathpings to WA and they've been checking it out, etc etc.
Today I receive this response to my ticket:

WA_Support said:
On the pathping results provided I do pick up some packets being lost which is of concern. I do however see that your currently utilizing a Home ADSL Uncapped 1Mbps service. This service type is not recommended for gaming purposes and as such I would recommend testing with a home pro service. Here is the relevant details -

This is the file I sent them with the "home-pro" results and my Mweb account results: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21762292/pathping_2.txt
I get the same results using the home-uncapped and home-pro accounts.

What I find sad is that WA doesn't recommend the home-uncapped for gaming. Yes, they said it. Right there. So does that mean that if I don't want to pay more for gaming I have to sit with packet loss? :(

Not a single lost packet on MWEB.

See, now I find this particularly funny.

I spent four months on WebAfrica's Home Uncapped, arguing about my latency issues in gaming. Nothing was done about it regardless of being repeatedly assured that they are "working on it."

Now it's revealed that their official response is, "Well, we totally understand you're paying a premium for these throttled and shaped accounts which, should you exceed your limit, will also result in the receipt of a courtesy termination warning, but packet loss is also part of what you signed up for by using this product." REALLY?

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, frootster.

What a load of horse manure. Not only do you throttle these accounts, charge more for them than your competitors, bully your customers into staying within their "uncapped threshold" but you also have the audacity to lie through your teeth about resolving these issues?

Utterly appalling.

Thank goodness I switched to Mweb this month.

It seems to be a trend with WA that they are trying to get more and more people onto their expensive accounts, and reading quite a few responses by forumites this seems to be the way they are going as their basic accounts don't seem capable of much, so now a lot of complaints are dealt with by upgrading the account.

So their basic system can't cope / profits are a bit low, so try and get people onto the expensive accounts.

Maybe I am reading too much into things :)

I had the same Response where I actually tested the Home uncapped against the Home Pro, and the difference is shocking.

I was on the Home Uncapped while my bro was on the HOme Pro. in the same match I had huge packetloss while he was playing 100% so in honest truth. Webafrica's Shaper is at fault and not our lines nor our dslams and nor our accounts.

These accounts are within the 6 day limit and the 6 hour period. no Thresholds have been reached.

Yeah well, just look at how many times they have changed their initial stance on things. Initially it was, we don't care if you download a lot, "that is what the rolling windows are for". Now they send out threats. And then they again are "it was worded incorrectly".

Then there was the case with FreeZone. That didn't work correctly. Now we are seeing that the threshold windows aren't working correctly either.

If they are going to continue turning a blind eye to these problems then I think a lot of people are going to leave them, which is already happening.

The thing that shocks me the most, is that on their forums. As soon as someone complains about something new, it is always, "we didn't notice it and all monitors showed everything was great".

They might have great support, but it seems their support doesn't really rectify the problems.

On my account, as soon as you go over the 7 day threshold, then you get throttled and shaped into the ground. Not just throttled or just shaped. Your entire line speed goes down, and some protocols gets shaped as well. This is even on weekends and after hours. Those who are wondering. I am on a 384 line account. Also https sites are much slower across the board on my WA uncap account. Sometimes I have to reload GMail a few times to get it loaded or get it to start loading.

PS.: The quotes are not the actual word that were used, but the meaning is generally the same.

Meh. I'm glad I kicked WA "un"capped* to the curb. I used it for the month of March. What a horrible experience. I made a point of ordering it a few days before the end of Feb to activate March 1. March 1 comes... no internet. Get home from work, still no internet. So I phone the support line. 27 minutes later (at a cost of R18.24), the tech "re-applies" the activation, and finally the damned account worked. Sigh.

This "rolling window" crap is for the birds, and is a complete farce. I've been with mweb for 11.5 days, and I'm happy so far.
