Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

Have also just cancelled my account (will only take effect end of next month). Will try Mweb out in May and see how that goes.

Depending on that, or if WebAfrica improves in April, I might be back or I might stay.

Will have to see.

Sad, but oh well.

Tried mweb for the first time, and must say im more then impressed. With both the service received when signing up as well as the performance. Just hope it lasts. Would have never thought in my lifetime that I would recommend them. They even gave me next month for free when i signed up after my trial account. But think its just till end of this month that when you signup april will be for free.

Neato!

I'm trying my hand at signing up again. But I already have an account.

Each time I try log in during the sign-up process (i.e. clicking "I already have an account and want to upgrade") it just sends me back to the form to fill out my details. When I do so, it then tells me that I'm already registered and that I can either proceed and create a separate and unlinked account or I can cancel and log in and upgrade my current one).

*sigh* Some things never change.

I cancelled the WA account a few days after signing up. I could have kicked myself for not listening to my friend who is with mweb. I've just signed up with them today (they are slightly cheaper, and don't have this rolling window nonsense). Three days of WA hell left.

Clearly I'd be staying where I am. Windows was a fail when IS started with it, it failed hard when AH tried it and it's not looking good for WA. This all comes back to a simple rule in programming: KISS...

Rolling windows in relation to?
We don't have any issues with our rolling windows.

Keep an eye on our careers page, keeping it simple is what we do - jump on-board and come work for us.

Not quite the picture I get from the warning emails as well as your customers leaving. There is also the fact that you yourself seems to lack presence here once there really is a problem. What happened to your "PA" that was suppose to take over the PR part and actually sort out problems?

Once you have managed to venture outside South Africa and are established world wide I might consider it.

The warning emails are simply that, a warning. These are sent to guys who are exceeding their thresholds often and are rather encouraged to use the service for it's purpose.

I have a lack of presence on the forums? Maybe I can be more active yes, I have someone who's starting in my department on Monday to help out with the load. Not sure if you understand the extent of my work covering everything online, but criticism well received, thanks.

And no, I'm not hiring a PA. He's someone who'll be doing exactly what I'm doing and getting things fixed up for you.

What is the purpose of an uncapped internet connection?

Left WA long time ago, but still reading the thread now and then. Just from curiosity Jeff, what happened to that mail that your CEO was busy writing back in December. Did he manage to finish it. Still waiting for it.

I hate to say this (not really, I'm ecstatic about it :p), but HA! What'd I tell you last year? :D

I find it odd that you didn't even make a response to ColinR's post. Is calling your customers and making threats in the form of ultimatums standard practice for WA now? Personally, if any company treated me that poorly, I'd tell them to go get stuffed.

Also, any comment on why customers need to submit cancellations so far in advance, but WA can cancel an account instantly? I'd like some info on that.

And ColinR, prior to receiving this call, did WA send you any warning emails?

Shut up, you :p

Don't get me wrong, I love WebAfrica and if they sort out their network I'd be happy to return. Until then, I'd rather vote with my wallet.

Anyway, it's official. I've decided to sign up with Mweb.

No godawful lagspikes, perfectly stable latency, no painful drops in speed, no Skype crawling at 5-20kB/s. So the decision is an easy one.

Goodbye, WebAfrica :(

And ColinR, prior to receiving this call, did WA send you any warning emails?

Service is crawling at the moment. Mostly seems international that is slow. To be fair, we did receive an email both times we exceeded the 7day window:

Hi <Name>

Please note that you have exceeded your 7 day rolling window usage limit for account: <Account>@wadsl as explained in our Home Uncapped Q&A. You may experience slower speeds as a result of this.

We recommend you either upgrade to a higher speed Home Uncapped account, or a Business Uncapped service. Alternatively, changing to a high usage capped account, in which speeds are not limited according to usage, may be beneficial.

Please note that continued excessive usage of our service may result in service termination, as explained in our Home Uncapped Acceptable Usage Policy.

Don’t forget you can monitor all usage through your DSL Console. Please call us on 086 000 9500 or email us on [email protected] if you do not know your log-in details, or for any queries relating to your Home Uncapped account.

Please understand that we are under an obligation to enforce these policies in order for us to continue to provide a good value, high quality internet experience for all of our customers.

Thank you,
Web Africa

Ah, fair enough, but calling a customer, threatening to terminate his account immediately if he doesn't upgrade is still pretty excessive.

In fact, even the warning emails are excessive, and this here is the kicker;

Isn't the rolling window there as a safety measure to prevent people from using excessive amounts of bandwidth? If you employ a system that throttles heavy users, shouldn't it be enough?

If you're going to complain about excessive usage despite there being a system in place to prevent excessive usage, doesn't that make the rolling window redundant? Then you might as well remove the rolling window entirely because it clearly isn't doing what it's meant to do?

That's just my take on it.

That was my understanding as well.

Asked this to death to be met with silence. Clearly they still lack backbone (and skills?) to resort to bullying tactics.

:edit
ColinR how many warnings did you get ?

2. One in Feb, one in March.

Speeds are back to normal today.

Am I correct in saying that the usage will be measured on the hour (ie 6am,7am,etc)?

I scheduled my programs and NetLimiter to slow down at 6am.
Netlimiter measured 70MB between 6am and 7am.
WA's usage table measured 296.83 MB...

From this it doesn't seem that the usage and the rolling windows will be fun to sort out so that ^ that doesn't happen.
