Your BIS Speed

Fastest download speed I've ever got was 272kbps on VC. Tried mtn and was hardly managing to get up to 100kbps.

My MTN BIS speeds (Bold 9000) SUX big time here in Cape Town (Plattekloof/Goodwood area mostly) ... to the point where I ask myself every day if BIS is still worth it. Some of the VC speeds indicated above do seem unrealistic on BIS. If so then you guys are VERY fortunate as I've been getting the idea BIS is a throttled service as it's more beneficial for the networks when you go off BIS onto the internet VPN.

BIS goes up to 384kbps as far as I know, but VC may have opened the lid for their clients.

All that I know is that my BIS feels like a dialup on MTN and after seeing the result below I now know why :(

Getting the following result:
Avg. Download Speed: 29.04Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 94.34Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 14.9Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 21.16Kbits/s

Do you need to specify a specific APN for BIS under advance > TCP/IP ? and will this increase your speed?

I used the blackberry.net APN when testing

mine

i did one test and got 2Kbits/s max down speed which sucks.

did another one and got these results:

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 69.29Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 192.03Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 23.74Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 95.41Kbits/s

What should my APN be? its currently blackberry.net.

But the Blackberry icon is visible and 3G is in caps....so that must mean it is using BIS surely??

Uhm no, that just means you are connected to BIS , it does not mean your data is going via BIS . Just like you can see the "Wifi" icon, does not mean you are actually connecting via Wifi . You have to set each application to use BIS specifically [or it will pick whichever is available ] . Most default BB apps are set up to use BIS anyway. Simplest way to test all this is to turn OFF your APN settings [there's a checkbox under Options -> Advanced -> TCP/IP] , BIS apps will continue to function, non-BIS apps will not work.

I have a few apps that can not go via BIS [mostly video streaming / downloading type of apps] and if i turn off my APN settings they can't even load. If i turn the APN settings on it will use the regular 3G and not BIS, even if my BB indicates the "capital 3G and BIS icon" .
