MWEB ADSL AUP: Fair is fair

This is not what Rudi Jansen said at the recent MyBroadband conference.

He categorically stated they only consider multiple users (more than 1 user behind a router) as abuse.

Nothing about using different protocols, etc.
 
What would be fair is; if MWEB can provide clear and static rules on what type and volume of usage is acceptable and under which circumstances.

MWEB has had ample opportunity to review usage patterns and make decisions on what they deem to be fair.

It is time for transparency and a clear set of FUP's.
 
my concern with the fair use policy for ISPs lies in two related issues:
(1) the independence of the adjudicator of what is fair
(2) "fairness violators" can with impunity simply conduct their unfairness elsewhere on being caught

The compound effect is that FUPs can become a game between ISP and user. The ISP couches ways to cap "uncapped" packages (I am still waiting for Telkom to offer an "uncapped" product with an FUP requiring 80% of your usage to be "local" - with MWeb out of being local ...), users specifically use the wrong product and so it goes.

What I would like to see is ISPs - particularly MWeb (because of their size) take the leap and subject FUP calls - both whether a FUP ammendment is reasonable and whether a user has violated the FUP to an external adjudicator, and that on finding adversely against user may register the user on a list against which ISPs are able to deny service until the user rectifies the unfair usage.

The adjudicatory framework will cost money to set up but with a proper costing system is possibly a lot cheaper for ISPs than a risky self-determination model.

Agree.

The issue MWEB is facing more and more is they sold themselves as the consumer champion but at the end of the day need to run a business just like any other ISP.

As they learn the lessons many other ISP's learned the hard way, and the financial realities kick in, we'll see them more often backtracking on the consumer-centric statements they made over the last few months.

I fully expect them to set a cap at some point on their uncapped product.

This is way too complicated and there is no need to set this up.

Publish your FUP in clear, measurable parameters and stick to it.

As a matter of fact, I suspect the CPA will put an end to these nebulous FUP's. You cannot sell a product with intentionally fuzzy definitions of the service which you can change at will and not apply consistent rules.
 
I long for the day when all this utter nonsense is a distant memory.

I still think Mweb have done a great thing, but who else just wants fast, affordable internet?
 
What would be fair is if Mweb actually provided an uncapped service for what they advertise as "uncapped".

What would be fair is if Mweb used the correct product descriptions to advertise their limited and restricted products.

What would be fair is if we all quit acting like we are living in the early 1990s and started acting like we are living in the second decade of the twenty first century.

What would be fair is if residential users actually got some reasonable access to all the bandwidth that they have been denied for all these past years at a reasonable price.

That's my opinion... yours might be different... don't bother posting it though... I probably don't care to read it. Too bad you already read mine :p

Exacltly we are not living in the 1990s FGS !!

But on a reasonable note Gary, we do have Cell C that can save our MoM and PoPs :)

I must defend MWEB here: I think MWEB’s FUP or the implementation thereof is not the main issue. There are numerous ISPs in South Africa, offering a variety of services. You are not forced to use MWEB – if you don’t like their service, move on.

People complain profusely about MWEB’s FUP and even service levels, but why not simply move to another ISP?

I have to admit, my dealings with MWEB have been pretty damn good, personally.

I think MWEB are working within many strictures outside of their control and I also feel they are doing their utmost to deliver what people need, despite all the difficulties in place.
 
fup is standard practice in the developed world and its no surprise that our isps have these policies, when all is said and done i consistently do more than 350gb per month on

mweb uncapped without any issues, p2p runs fine at night and browsing is almost always snappy so i can live with mwebs policy, i really dont need to run at line speed 24/7 just

because i am "uncapped", if you think mweb has unfair terms and conditions try afrihost for size.

This is also my experience. They obviously face many challenges, and have to put measures in place to protect their network and service levels. Their FUP is one such measure - if you dont like it...simply find a better ISP.

Maybe a feather in the cap of MWEB that people will fight to try to stay with them? ;)

We were all waiting for the Free the Web thingy... and when it was announced we were all excited for a few hours... until we read the terms and conditions. At that point I chose not to use Mweb (and subsequently also stayed away from the others who followed). I have remained with OpenWeb's Uncapped Express+ product all this time... probably more than a year now. And even though it is almost double Mweb's price I feel I have gotten my money's worth... cos I use it heavily.

I knew Mweb's terms and conditions would be a problem from the start... and called it right here in this board that very day. Since then there has been a lot of complaining. I know that mweb has still revolutionised the market in a sense... but I was not happy with the way in which they did it. I am not prepared to sacrifice honesty for the sake of price. I know that there are many users who are quite happy with them... but I still ask..."at what cost?" what have we lost in allowing this?

I am all for cheaper prices and more bandwidth... but I am also in favour of honesty and up-front open clear terms and conditions. In my mind, you can't have one without the other... at least with no complaining or bad PR. Mweb deserves all the crap that they get over this. they brought it on themselves.
 
On my 384 line I'm getting 30GB a month, haven't had any problems, the last time I had to call mweb was to open the account. Haven't seen any inkling of shaping or anything so i guess article is correct.
 
well all ISP should not be allowed to sell accounts likes this as UNCAPPED. They need to sell them as 100GB or 200GB Capped Accounts.

Uncapped means Uncapped with no limits or restrictions. The Best ISP is OpenWeb as they sell what there packages state.
 
I wish MWEB would cancel their uncapped products, just to shut the mouths of all the complainers here on MyBB.

Bunch of whining ungrateful asses. If you're unhappy with their product or FUP, take your money elsewhere. please go to WebAfrica or TelkomInternet and pay their crappy prices for capped internet. Or switch to one of the many IS based uncapped accounts. There are plenty of alternatives. MWEB is by no means a monopoly.

But for crying out loud, stop complaining about something revolutionary, something great, something we've all been begging for for years. Even in 1st world countries, they have FUPs, and some ISPs have even cancelled their uncapped products altogether.

If all you gonna do is bitch and moan, without providing constructive feedback, or at least having an informed opinion, rather shut the hell up. And if you still cant do this, then you need to join Juliass at the ANCYL - a perfect match.

As i said... I've never used this Mweb product... but I reserve my right to bitch and moan about it! :p

anytime any company tries to pull a fast one... you will find me there bitching and moaning about it! ;)
 
Doing between 300 and 400 gigs every months. I have no problem with the shaping or their AUP. Thanks MWeb!

I do 900 to 1000 gigs a month. I also have no problem with their shaping or AUP... but I guess that's cos I don't use Mweb! :D
