do any of you guys perhaps know if there are two types of K4505 USB modems that Vodacom supplies?

A VC store told me that they supply the K4505 and that it's speed is 7.2, but from what I've found on the internet it can do 21.6?

A friend of mine has K4505 from Huawei and it can do 21.1. He got it from Poynting.

Would I be able to stream media from my pc to a network media player using the Tp Link 3420 and obviously the Cell C modem.
What additional hardware would I need?

Main challenge with streaming HD content over Wireless N is going to be signal strength. At 37% (according to Vistumbler) accessing my AP upstairs from the lounge downstairs was useless. I ended up running Ethernet down some existing conduit into the lounge and then installing a second TP Link AP just for my media player (which sits at the opposite side of the lounge about 6m away).

Thanks Morkhans.Since you access point is upstairs, you're using an ADSL connection into a router, that feeds an ethernet cable into your lounge, to a TPlink, which wirelessly feeds your media player and PC.
So your're not using a wireless ISP which would eliminate the need for for an extension?

What extension are you referring too?

If your Wireless signal is good enough to your media player and you've patched your PC via Ethernet into the TPLink 3G router you shouldn't need anything else.

I have just purchased the Cell C Black dongle 21.6mbp deal and would like to use this to connect my PS3 to the net for online gaming.

Please can you advise which would be the best router to use with the Cell C network for my PS3 connection. what do you think about the TP-Link W8960N Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router ??

I asked at Cell C shop in Pavillion (Durban) today. The salesman says that Cell C had a router that gave problems and they have therefore stopped selling it, and that they are going to release a new router in about 2 months! I'm just quoting the salesman!

I am interested in purchasing the TP-Link 3420 but was wanting to know, if one leaves it connected 24/7 (without it disconnecting after set idle time) how much data is used for the connection to stay alive. Or would it be best to set an idle time disconnect and reconnect when on demand?

Same here, can't notice any data usage when I am connected but not using the connection.

Thanks for the info guys. Decided to go and purchase it anyway (3220) and its amazing. Connects within 15 seconds and is really stable compared to being plugged in to my computer.

I use a Dovado - great wireless router, but expensive.

I then bought a new TP-LINK TL-MR3220 3G/3.75G wireless router to use with my Cell C black dongle. It works fantastic !!! and only cost R 399.00

I am leaving for the USA on friday, and will be buying a new Trend net tew-655br3g for around $ 69.00. It is a wireless router that will work with the Cell C black dongle - but it is a portable unit, with a built-in battery. For wireless routing while on the road

PC connected to wireless router but can't log on to Internet.

I managed to set up my PC to link up with a TP-Link 3420 router but I can't I seem to connect to the Internet.The cell c modem is plugged into the USB port of the router and its on.Colour on modem indicates its receiving a good signal.
I suspect its my settings but where do I begin to know what goes where.
Should the cell c ip address settings be on the routers tcp/ip settings or vice versa.
In tools-internet options-connections-LAN in windows vista ,what should i put there?

I'd be tremendously grateful if anyone can assist.

Check the modem

Hi

Normally if you connect to these routers all settings are automatic. So start from the beginning:

Connect the Cell C modem directly to you pc/laptop and see if you can get onto internet that way.
If it does connect directly, then connect back in router, logon to router interface(check manual on how) and make sure the modem connects - router interface should show this.
I'm not familiar with the router itself but it should have a diagnostic interface where you can "ping". If you can, ping 'www.google.com' for instance and see if you get a response. If you do, this means the router itself has internet connectivity and your pc is not getting its network settings right.

Post back with results. Good luck.

Which modem make and model do you have?
Have you installed the latest firmware on the router?

The router should be running DHCP so your LAN connection on the PC should be set to DHCP (get IP automatically). The default gateway you receive from DHCP will be the IP of the router. You can put that IP in your browser and login to the web interface.

I'm getting full whoosh with the modem connected directly to the pc so its not the signal.I'm going to try this ping test from the router as you suggested and see what happens.
