@AfriGenie

I've just checked the Telkom coverage map and fibre is now available in our street! Stoked. But the Afrihost site is saying it's not available. Is this due to which providers are available? Would like to stay with Afrihost if possible... I'm staying in Rondebosch.

Hi! :)

There may be a bit of a delay between the period that Telkom completes the installation of the FTTH in your area, and then actually updates their system to allow us to begin sign-ups.

Your best bet is to register your interest on the Coverage Page, and we'll contact you the moment the installation can be completed in your area.

Cancelled my fibre order with Afrihost,

Going with another proivder who is offering a free router + 2 months free
subscription.

Also not the bad FUP for home fibre uncapped products.

All this for R24 more per month

:(

I'm really sorry to hear that! That's defintely a good offering though! Which provider made that offer available, if you don't mind me asking?

I get a "Whoops! Something went wrong, please try again" message when I try to do that on your coverage page.

Drop me a PM with your name, surname and email address and I'll get you registered quickly. :)

Hi Just curious as per your website

Home fibre 10mbps is R799.00 download 10mbps and upload 5mbps
Premuim fibre 10mbps is R999.00 download 10mbps and upload 5 mbps

whats the difference between these 2 packages?

The difference is in the policies applied to the account. All our fibre is bundled with Uncapped accounts (which work exactly as our DSL accounts). So Home Uncapped can be shaped and throttled, while Premium can only be shaped. All policies are applied according to overall demand on the network, so we won't shape or throttle if we don't have to. Shaping is only applied to non-realtime services like torrents, etc.

Far from impressed in general.
Very constrictive packages - no flexibility.
No ability to pre-order. WebAfrica does this with a smile and regular updates. They also have a pile of options in packages.

A general "too bad" attitude when complaining - "take it or leave it. Bye!" was my last response from AH on twitter.

On our FTTH page you do have the option to register your interest in FTTH, we'll then keep you updated as FTTH packages become available in your area.

We opted to not take pre-orders as the time between having the cables layed and the FTTH roll-out starting can vary greatly.

What sort of package are you interested in getting?

Hi
Whats AH FUP?
I see they offering to cover Vumatel installation and Activation costs (R2700) plus a free modem.
Seems worth it

Warning to everyone: Stay away from Afrihost fibre, their support is useless. You'll struggle for months to get an install and if you ever have an issue don't expect a resolution within a few days.

Since I applied for fibre with Afrihost in December the fibre team there has responded to 0 of my tickets. Had to speak to octotel directly to get the install happening in the first place.

After the installation the router Afrihost sent was me didn't work, so I called the support and they insisted the line wasn't working. Eventually after calling them several times I gave up and bought a new router and was up and running within an hour.

After I finally got connected, and issue I have is never responded to. It's always passed on to the fibre team (who I'm not even sure exist at this point) and ignored. The only way I ever get a resolution is to phone every day and ask for an update.

If anyone reading this is considering getting afrihost, my suggestion is literally anyone else.

I used Afrihost and had my fibre installed in 5 days, same experience with someone down the road.

Granted their normal support guys are not good but Afriman/AfriGenie always get my issues resolved.

Is there still after hours free usage? If so, for how long?

Packages on Vumatel:

Home Fibre 100/100 R1499/pm FUP 300GB

CISP:
Fibre 50/5 R999/pm No FUP
Fibre 100/10 R1099/pm No FUP
Fibre 100/100 R1199/pm No FUP

CrystalWeb:

Fibre 100/100 R1089/pm No FUP 12 Month Contract

Afrihost needs to treat fibre as fibre and not 2005 ADSL. The policies that you have set are just a copy of your ADSL policy. Your leaderboard even shows that you have users smashing that 250GB limit of a 40Mbps connection and the only reason you most likely don't have more people breaking the 250Gb mark is because they know that there internet is going to be useless for the rest of the 30 Day window.

Afrihost needs to remove there soft capped option and do the following: Capped for users who know how much they need. Uncapped No softcap/no throttling for the power users and business fibre for businesses.

Currently Afrihost is doing what mweb did back in 2005-2012, have very low softcaps on decent speed connections and then expect you to pay more so you don't get a destroyed connection. This is way smaller ISPs are dominating the market. Cool Ideas is just a example of one.

And to bring thing into perspective I have a 50Mbps connection and we use anywhere between 1TB -1.4TB per month.

I hope this makes sense because I don't want to see the competition dying because that just create monopolies.

This is exactly why I will be leaving Afrihost after many years of hassle-free service on ADSL now that I'm moving over to FTTH. Afrihost, you're great at ADSL, (not as great as you used to be, but still good). But you're a long way behind the curve when it comes to fibre. If the ISP is talking about shaping and throttling, then I'm out. Sorry.
