Afrihost Mobile Delivery Feedback Thread

My 1GIG capped account is there, it is just not showing the mobile data account yet

Oh wait yes, the guys were asking about their shaping status iirc.
Installed the app now, never had a need to before.

AfriMan / Afriguy,

Now that the dust has settled and we're all patiently waiting for our data to go live in September, please can you confirm how the APN is going to work on an MTN sim.

Without any authentication (we merely change to the "afrihost" APN on our handsets), I assume that there needs to be some link set up between our Afrihost account and our MTN contract number. However, there is no field in Clientzone to capture this information. Is Afrihost going to assume that the cellphone number we supplied when we signed up (potentially years ago) is our MTN Contract number? This would be flawed; what if I signed up with my work Vodacom number, but I want to use my Afrihost data on my personal MTN Contract? Or is there perhaps some other step we need to do in order to ensure it will work?

Hey Guys

Just want to say a few things

Firstly, we are super, uber, incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in yesterday's promotion. It was exciting (and humbling) to see the reaction from clients who jumped on this offer. Maybe our servers mirrored our feelings, becuase we were stunned and amazed. But like our servers, we recovered (hopefully with grace) and managed to get everything done. But for those who did experience timeouts and crashes etc, we are sincerely sorry. We hope the extra R20 million in free devices and data we gave away made up for it (our original promotion was only meant to be a R2.7million rand giveaway)

Secondly, I see lots of threads have popped up (including this one) for feedback on Mobile, for the promo, for the deals and basic FAQ's. Myself and AfriGirl/Guy are doing our best to keep track on all the threads. Hopefully it will start to think out and this will be the main Feedback and Q&A thread eventually. Please remember that if you have a burning question, drop us a PM, that way you are assured of an answer - we'll do our best, but we might miss a post here and there managing all the threads.

Thanks again everyone, and here's hoping that most of you (or all) managed to score one of the 8,000 MiFi's :)

Have an awesome, awesome day :)

The APN functionality will only be available on launch on 3rd September. However, data is locked to a SIM and number. Pre-Order sims are assigned a "number" to access the network, but voice and SMS service is disabled. So you'll have to purchase another data plan, using your MTN number, in order to use the APN on your existing SIM.

Hi AfriMan

Will the Afrihost APN allow incoming connections? This is a big issue for me as I would like to use this for managing remote devices like an alarm system.

Thanks.

Email from Afrihost - "Your Mobile Data Account is Ready!"

I assume this was sent a bit prematurely? I thought it was only ready 3/4 September? Or can we actually use the data already?

You can't use the data without the SIM. The data is provision and is technically ready, but you need to get the SIM, and you need to RICA to get the SIM - so it's all covered :)

We'll release that kind of technical information closer to launch :)

Whoa, hang on a second - if you are right, then this is huge!

Virtually all of the marketing around this 5GB promo has stated quite clearly that MTN Contract customers will be able to use their data via the APN. In fact, this was my primary reason for purchasing the deal (the Mifi was a bonus). Are you now saying that MTN Contract customers can in fact NOT use their 5GB of data because it is locked to the Afrihost SIM?

Still works out cheaper for me, I am on a TopUp with MTN,....the inclusive credit I get, I use for data, as I make about R10 worth of calls a month. R145 is still a way better deal that MTN will ever offer, and its month to month and do not have to go through the nightmare that is MTN balls up/provisioning service or support.

Guys, I'm sorry but this is still abit pricey.

At R29/GB - If I use 10GB a month thats R290.

8ta is still the best value:
10GB @ 199 p/m = R19.90/GB

And with 8ta, my download speed is between 6Mbps - 10Mbps and never lower. And I also get an additional 10GB Wifi data.

Afrihost, if you drop your price to R15/GB then I will definitely sign up.

Quick math, I had a 10GB + 10GB contract for 299 p/m as well as a 10GB contract for 199pm

Total cost = 299 + 199 = 498 p/m for a total of 30GB

Afrihost = 29 x 30 = 870 p/m

75% difference

A) no contract
B) way more coverage then 8ta has ( I also have no 8ta 3g)
C) If you signed up you would have gotten a modem worth R1000 free
D)you can leave anytime you want without being murder by a contract

The coverage alone is a goood reason to get this deal

I dislike being locked into a contract and this works ideally for my smartphone...no more need to monitor my data usage.

Doesn't help me much as I get excellent coverage - full signal in Sandton

@Afriman - we had 15 people sign up for this deal at our company. They signed up in their own private capacities, and all put in their own private physical addresses. If possible, we'd like to make special arrangements for all 15 packages to be delivered to our company premises at the same time (with the users consent, of course). No doubt this will save you guys some dosh, and make it easy for us too. Will this be possible?
