hhmmm, this deals seems tempting, I am still having issues with my current Vumatel line with international line speeds.

Maybe I should just get a new installation done and get a new CPE box installed in the house with new fibre and just have two connections. if this one works out then I can just cancel the account on the old line.

tempting

If the issue is your Vumatel installation, surely the easiest way to test is to just ring a neighbour's door and ask if you can test their line.

Seems strange if your local is fine and international is problematic. Are you with Afrihost already? Maybe the issue is on the ISP side.

Was an Afrihost client years ago, but had all sorts of issues when on ADSL, looking at moving to Fibre, which would be better Octotel or Frogfoot, they have both dug up my pavement?

If you have some packet loss on your line ( even as little as 3-5% ) - international speeds will be much worse off than local - which will hardly see the effect if it - if any.

Octotel had the most pathetic fibre network I've ever seen when I stayed in CT earlier this year. Collapsed every evening like clockwork, and the customer support was rude when I tried to get them to do something about it.

Whereas I've only heard good things about Frogfoot. They're busy wiring up half of PE and those with live service are having a great time.

Great, thanks, Frogfoot claim they will be live end of August, I will wait.

You can order so long to take advantage of the special though - you dont pay until the line goes live...

Hey Purspyk, great to see you back here :)

I know we had some considerable demons on DSL way back when, but I am confident we've put that behind us. IN fact, we've spent quite a bit of time and money covering all the angles.

I really appreciate you giving us another chance :)

It's really much of a muchness which provider you choose, but when you check out our website you should be able to see the lead times and prices for both providers and decide which suits you best. Both of them have really great networks and infrastructure.

For those wondering what the router looks like that comes with the AH offer : Here it is :
.Snip.

I (and 2 other people I know) had a bad experience with that router. It needed to be reset every 3 days or the wifi dropped. It's running it's own unofficial (not on dlink) firmware that's got a Russian suffix. Tried factory resetting it twice no difference, Afrihost claims that they got that version of firmware made special to resolve issues in the previous versions...

When I explained the above to afrihost support they suggested I try restarting the router.. as if the previous restarts hadn't been enough.

Ended up getting myself a better router that wasn't run by the Russians. Been working perfectly for 3 months, no restarts needed.

hmmmm, that doesnt sound good. I was planning on using it as an AP only - I use Unify kit in my house primarily, so I'll have to see how that works out.

You could just install an opensouce firmware. I was lazy.

I'm not aware of any non-standard firmware on our routers. We pretty much supply the router as is from the distributor.

Would love to know more about this - if there is some firmware out there doing strange stuff, we'd love to know more about it.

Please drop me a PM.

Is it easy to switch from one ISP to another, I currently have my ADSL with Axxess, and don't want to land up with double billing etc

I used this this exact same router for 18 months(when I was with afrihost) and had no issues.. The tplink that I'm using now is worse with constant disconnects :(

Seems like it's luck of the draw then.

But 3 people inside of 20 km of each other, same provider, same package, same router. All issues resolved by replacing routers. Coincidence?
