Exactly how it works. My credit is still there. So for me 1st month is July. 2nd free month is Aug. 3 Free months is Sept. Then after that it will start consuming the credit on my account.

You should take the router because you will lose out if you don't. It would be free as it is also covered by the R5k so spend it as much as possible.

Easy to check if it's on 1Gbps. Login to the D-LINK router. On the left click on Summary. On that page on your right just slightly down the page you will see LAN PORTS. Check what speeds you see there.

This is mine. All my ethernet ports are connected at 1000M-Full which is 1Gbps. If you see 100Mbps then you know that is the issue. The LAN usb dongle does not support 1Gbps ethernet. Your cat5e cable is fine.

Okay so @sand_man How is the Afrihost network treating you? Ohh btw just drop Wendy a mail a organize that FREE D-LINK router. It's a decent router and even have "repeater" mode which can work as a wifi extender or just put it away in the cupboard because you can never have enough routers with lightning around.

I've checked mine and my ports are on 100M-Full and 10M-Full. Can these be adjusted/changed anywhere?

You can force it in the router. On the left click Advanced then Port Settings. There you will be able to disable the slower speeds. If the these devices does not support 1Gbps then they will get disconnected from the router once your force the 1000M-Full mode so do take note of that. This is probably what is going to happen when you do this but worth a try forcing it and seeing if it negotiates at 1Gbps but I doubt.

Yip, you were correct. My MacBook did not like the forced speeds. Oh well, the WiFi connection at 200Mbps seems to be pretty stable, so it's not a train smash if I can't get those speeds via cable.

Yes well if you are close enough to the wifi router and there aren't any other wireless signals on the same channel it should work fine. Remember that stuff like wireless keyboards,mouse and console controllers can also cause interference actually.

I actually need a wifi extender as throughput in some parts of the house is weak!!

So been on the account for around 36 hours now and I got to say, it's been super sweeeet!!

I've given up on the performance tests like Bandwidth.net, Speedtest.net, DSLreports etc as that is an exercise in futility. Also very frustrating as the results are rather below par.

I download tons and RD is my main port of call + Sonarr/Torrents which does its stuff in the background.

Everything local absolutely flies, full line speed and RD used in conjunction with IDM pretty much 70% of max line speed. Better than I was achieving with Home-connect and 50% cheaper!

I don't Twitch and I don't game (my daughter does) but Youtube, Netflix zero issues as one would expect. I don't consider any of those a measure of performance and/or taxing on a gigabit account. When I hit 32 servers with an IDM download, that puts a significant amount of stress on the network and so far the account has performed admirably.

I mean, how would one actually put a gigabit account under extreme duress? In the domestic setting? Not possible!

I haven't run any iperf's, WinMTR, ping plotter or any other tools designed to analysis network performance. Couldn't be bothered. I mean, I will if anyone's interested but for me, I haven't got the energy right now to obsess over the raw data.

So all in all I'm super chuffed so far! The Pure Fibre deal is truly GOLD! And the monthly premium, once December rolls round, is R800 less than I was paying over at Home-connect. Provided the performance sticks, we good to go..... And that's one massive caveat... how are these accounts going to age????!!!

Everyone is super cheerful and friendly right now but let's see this thread in 6 months time!!! That, my dear friends, will be the acid test!!!

Yeah same. For me Afrihost does really work well and the deal is pretty much one of the best.

So far it's been a joy and if it stays like this I can actually see them knocking Supersonic off top spot of best ISP.

Not sure about other networks but on Openserve it's been so good so glad this deal dropped in time for me to switch. So far I'm very happy and we'll see what the future holds.

This has been mentioned in the other thread, but what is up with the firmware on the D-Link router that comes with this package? When you go into the admin section of the router, where you set your locale - the default is set to "Russian Federation". That's a bit strange, innit?

I think these routers ( or the firmware itself ) is made in Russia and by default set to that locale if I'm not mistaken. Nothing dodgy about it as far as I know.
 
I need opinons....

Currently on 40meg capped, 200+200gb cap. In the last year or 2, I think I've only gone over the cap once.
I pay R917 + R109 for afrihost plus. Total R1026.

I have never had problems with the capped account, never throttled or shaped.
Do I stay put or:
get 40meg uncapped and save R109.
get 100meg uncapped and pay R91 more
In the last 2 scenarios I cancel Afri+ and also lose R500mb mobile data. (dont really need it)

What makes it even trickier is that since I migrated to my new premises, I'm getting 100megs on my 40meg line LOL. Which might change now that I've posted it publicly now.

Tempted for 100 uncapped, but no real benefit besides speedy game downloads and updates once every now and again....

Thoughts??

I'd suggest stay on the 40meg line speed uncapped, and if you ever feel the need to upgrade, it's not a hectic process. That's what I would do

But if he upgrades from the 1st August to pure Fibre doesn't he get 3 months free?

I think he is an existing Afrihost Fibre client on one of the older packages. So he won't get 3 months, he'll get only 2
