Afrihost - Pure Fibre Feedback Thread

I've noticed that when I connect via VPN to a UK server the download speed of my 200/100 pure fibre line drops down to just under 20 Mbps - is there anything I can do about it?

I use the VPN connection to log onto Eurosport Player for the Tour de France...

It's hard to measure with a VPN - could be the VPN server that's slow, or how the incoming server deals with traffic.

Is that service not available for local IP's?

Quick question. Managed to logon to client zone and make an order. If I want to start from next month? Doesn't seem to be a setting for that and my order is sitting in processing?Don't want to give the Object Number as yet in case it causes other problems on my line for the moment.

Sadly we don't have a scheduling option. Once you sign up, we'll transfer the line in as quickly as we can.

I changed my VPN app from NordVPN to ExpressVPN, and the download speed was much faster. It was even faster (90Mbps) when I tweaked a setting in ExpressVPN to only work in the browser on which I am accessing Eurosport Player.

Yeah, if the VPN server is overloaded or their DC is having problems, it would affect your experience :(

I joined earlier this week - small hiccup int he beginning because the system did not give me any free months and immediately billed me but the staff at Afrihost (bar one billing lady) were pretty good about it and sorted me out.
I migrated over from Webafrica who seemed to be having a lot of regular international packet loss.
So far pretty happy with the Afrihost network but remain cautious to see how it turns out if too many people join.

@AfriMan

Unable to verify my banking details. The email that I got 3 times now says they have paid R1 into my account and I need to verify the code. That did not happen so can't verify code. So I linked my credit card and changed everything to that instead but seems the router order is still stuck on "waiting for payment" because of the debit order details that I could not verify.

This is with Tyme Bank.

If we put the R1 in but it's not a card, not sure how long it takes to reflect. Changing bank details usually updates for the next billing cycle. We might need to intervene for this to either change billing, or alternate verification.

Do I have your details on PM?

Thanks for trusting us :)

Sorry about the one billing lady - our team are usually so awesome, but I guess anyone can have an off day :(

On Monday Afrihost will be upping my line from 100Mbps (which just migrated) to 200Mbps. I have until then to work out why the link between my desk and the switch next to the internet equipment is only 100Mbps instead of 1000Mbps.

This is the exact switch I'm using:
https://shop.dbg.co.za/tl-sg1008d.html
A cheapo gigabit TP-Link 8 port without PoE. I use 3 PoE injectors for the 3 Ubiquiti UniFi access points. Other than the link speed I have zero complaints. The switch is fully loaded: 2 wired PCs, 1 CCTV NVR, 3 access points, 1 router & 1 UniFi Cloud Key.

None of the network cables to the switch are close to 100m long. All are Cat5e crimped by myself and were tested using a cable tester before use. My PC and the new router supplied by Afrihost (which I'm using as a switch on my desk) are showing a gigabit link between one another. Another PC in the house also only has 100Mbps to the switch.

Is it safe to assume that the cheapo switch cannot maintain gigabit links for each port? Is there one that you guys would recommend?

Afrihost putting their marketing budget to good use no doubt?
My biggest fear ( yeah i'm sorry - I know i'm banging on and on about it - I'm very very pessimistic sometimes ) is that they over subscribe with this campaign and once many people are up and running with their 1Gbps, 200 and 100 Mbps links it all tanks.

I really really hope that won't happen, and that we will all be getting the speeds we pay for, all the time ( bar the inevitable issues that may crop up once and a while, as is the case with all ISP's )

I understand this fear completely. We've certainly made this mistake before. Quite a few things have changed since last time. We've learnt a lot. We're more skilled. Our network is bigger and more robust than before. We have more available cash to ensure our network is upgraded when it needs to be. And most importantly we own all of our own shares so there can be no outside curve balls thrown.

That all being said, let me say that doing this all is not easy at all. Doing it well is even more difficult. It takes a massive amount of investment in time, energy, skills and money. It's one thing to be awesome when you have 1000 or 10,000 clients. Quite another when you have hundreds of thousands. So could some things go wrong? Sure. But I am very hopeful and excited about the future of Pure Fibre. And we are committed to making it work.

I have the same switch, 5 port version though, and have seen the same thing. It occasionally negotiates with my MikroTik router at 100M. Resolved it by setting the port on the MikroTik to only advertise 1G which seems to have worked. Try simply unplugging it and plugging it back into your internet equipment so it re-negotiates at the correct rate. These TP-Link switches are rated at 16GB/s switching capacity for the 8 port version and 10GB/s for the 5 port version so I'm sure they can handle being fully loaded o_O

I have the same 5 port and have no issues with it. I installed it between the ONT and the router. Being on Openserve it's easy to switch accounts so on my main pc I dial the pppoe and then the router does the rest for the rest of my devices.

This TP Link is an amazing 5 port switch. No issues at all and running a 200Mbps line.

Also does not add any latency to the connection which is nice. This entry level ver cheap switch is top notch to be honest.
