BlackBerry vs Android vs Apple vs Windows

So people take a while to catch up. My friend had his BB 9000 stolen and I lost my BB 9780 recently. He went and bought a BB 8720 and a couple of days later I bought an S3 mini. He is so pissed now that he bought the BB after he had a look at my S3.

BlackBerry vs Android vs Apple vs Windows

The four biggest mobile platforms are battling it out for market share, with some platforms showing much strong growth than others

The emotive stuff against BB (and I have never been a BB customer) is overdone

Consider
- SA has had cheap BIs prices compared to the 1st world AND
- We have expensive data (getting cheaper)

If these dynamics happened in the UK BB would be doing better there as well

SA's market is entire rational and contary to many of this blogs iopinion it has little to do with Android and iOS's features, openness (or not) etc.
Its simple and rational

The way data costs are going, I would expect to lose about 500k users in the next 12 months.

if we could get the good midrange and entry level android devices here (like nexus 4 in midrange R250pm contracts and the Sony Xperia J for entry level R100pm contracts) They would kill off the blackberry market to windows phone levels within 36 months.

dont see apple moving from current market share, I think they are topped out. Android and windows phone (particular the nokia 520) will take a lot of market share in the next 12 months

As a non-owner, you would not have experienced the utter rubbish that BlackBerry (then RIM) dished out to the consumer. The emotive attacks per se, are those from owners suffering with less than mediocrity, that are being costed close to the price of a considerably superior product. With BIS disappearing and data bundle prices dropping, I can see a large drop in the BlackBerry market share in this country.

In other words, the market dynamics of a third world country. Most popular due to affordability, not due to it simply being better than its competitors. It does not make it a more rational market than say the US, it just makes it less selective.

so basically BB has less than 70% market share, while android has less than 20% Iphone has less than 10%. I think Android and WP will grow the most over the next year

Don't write BlackBerry off in SA despite the falling away of BiS with the Z10. In the last few weeks I visited many cell shops and everywhere I went people were asking to see the Z10. At Canal Walk there was a big marketing drive by BlackBerry. The Z10 was available to play with and staff was on hand to demo/explain ... and people were queueing up to get their hands on it. People that is not into tech talk about the Z10 ... and know the specs. There is for sure interest. Whether that translates to actual sales I don't know but there is a vibe for sure. In some markets BlackBerry may just surprise the prophets of doom ... proving just enough base sales to keep BlackBerry alive and buy them time to hit the US and Euro markets with a comeback.

I walk into a shop in Bloem and ask "which phone? and salesman says ,there is only one and that is the Z10".

Lots of "blind" people will walk in and ask for the next BB. They don't know about bis, just bbm. As long as it can bbm, its a bb.

OOB Shark will convert a lot of BB10 users to other platforms in the 24 to 36 month timeframe methinks

That there highlighted in red is the main problem in South Africa people are like stupid sheep, and those salespeople are the worst of them all, they practically force the blackberry down your throat.

But on the otherhand those stupid salespeople are my main source of entertainment when visiting a Vodacom / MTN shoppy xD
I allways make a fool out of them when visiting, and they too blind to even notice it. :D

That's actually how the market dynamics work everywhere in the world. Salespeople push the phones they get most commission off. It's not right, but it's how it is.
