BlackBerry vs Android vs Apple vs Windows

Bleh. I have a 9790 and an iPhone 4. iPhone is jailbroken, with loads of apps. BB has stock apps,facebook and a flashlight software.

The iPhone is just being used solely as a glorified GPS. I use my BB for everything - (Alot or incoming/outgoing emails)

I'm upgrading to a Z10 tomorrow - Cell C has a nice deal with 600MB data p/m.

Edit: As much as I want t get a S4/HTC One, I know I would be bored with it after a couple weeks after tweaking-customising it.

... as I'm trying to say. There is a big wide world out there into smartphones now. The US and Europe may have turned their backs on BB but not the rest of the world. There are markets that is very loyal to BlackBerry ... and this may just give BB enough traction to re-emerge in its old first choice markets.

Not brand loyalty... Technically Blackberry hardware is lacking.

Its the email system,BBM which made me choose it.
At least the camera is ok on the Z10 compared to older models.
 
An interesting comparison would be of how many devices each manufacturer (OEM) has on a particular network if not on all networks in SA.

In SA, it seems pseudo smartphones are the current craze despite all the excitement around Android and iOS amongst SA's elite and in developed nations. I know for sure Nokia has over at least 5million devices circulating on Vodacom alone out of Vodacom's 21million odd connections.

Yeah, same in my office. The Cell C special has got a lot of people switching to iPhones.

a) My wife has owned one and as Family CTO (like many others on this board) i am responsible for tech support

b) If we cannot comment (this time objectively) on something we have never owned will all the Fandroids shut up about Apple?
Or isnt it a 2 way street

Non-owner? Well not entirely. My wife owned one (a regular BIS device). I set it up, supported it etc.
She liked it but when she moved to iPhone she referred to BB as DOS.
She aint going back.

Rational - Well I never said that SA was more rational. I said they were rational. The US is rational so is the UK.
People make rational choices based on their requirements (cost, features, brand etc.)
Because someones choices dont match yours it does not make the people less rational

Dynamics - We need to remember that whilst data is more expensive in SA (compared to the US), BIS is cheaper than the US.
So we have two forces pushing the populace toward BB BIS

Of course now BB is phasing out BIS and because SA data prices are dropping the BIS attraction factor is likely to be less.

Amen. I am punished at work with a BB, I have an S3 for personal stuff, an iPad and the wife has just got an iPhone5, she had a BB9800 before that. Biggest hurdle for her now is realising the cost difference between BIS & regular mobile data. I feel she is going to be one of many feeling the pinch when the bill comes.

Well, these were your words... But thanks for the context. However, it did not address the point at hand, which was that BlackBerry was rubbish, and that the owners of this rubbish vented their frustrations of it, hence the "emotive" attacks / statements.

So repeating what I summed into one sentence.
 
My employer also punishes me with a BB :(.

My wife was an avid BB fan. Towards the end of last year, the thing finally gave out 3 months before it was time to replace it (factory probably got the 24month hidden setting wrong on that device). As we just had a baby, I couldn't let wife run around without being able to contact her or vice-versa. So having a Samsung Android Tab, I decided to introduce her to Android. And seeing that we are in any case getting a new device in 3 months (contract renewal), we bought a cheap Samsung Galaxy Pocket(R1k).

Getting at home all excited about this little phone, I was almost shot because it wasn't a BB. After some convincing she agreed to give it a try for at least a week.

Needless to say, when we renewed the contract, she got a Samsung Galaxy S3.

Turns out that she was afraid she won't be able to stay in contact with her BBM friends, but once WhatsApp was installed, all her BBM contacts came up. As it turned out, even people with BBs needed to connect with people using smartphones.

Once people realise there is life after BBM, life quickly returns to normal.

Answer => It was absolutely not for me.
But if your requirements are Voice, message and email it was fine.
 
My BiL got conned into a Nokia 920. The big selling point for him was being able to edit Office spreadsheets on the run. Only after having trying to use it, he found that xls is read-only, xlsx may be editable - you need office2013 docs to be certain of being able to edit.

Not having a file manager is a major no-no for me. You have no control over where to find or put files...
 
As soon as BB drops BIS (With it, me), they will almost certainly go bankrupt. I wonder, who actually owns a microsoft phone here in SA, I used to own a Samsung Omnia i900 but thats sitting in my drawer now
