Cheaper 3G Prices - Rep?

have decided to try out ADSL, mainly because of afrihost's R29/Gig. it actually made me realise that when i run out of bandwidth with my current V3G, i pay approx R200/Gig as i always buy 2Gig, and i will have a chance to pay R29.

speedwise im jumping from 3.6Mbps to 386kbps, but i've never really had 3.6 eg this weekend all i had was Edge. so will see how it goes, and if it works out well will get it at home too.

Vodacom Broadband Standard prepaid & Top Up / ADSL price comparison

The cost structure of establishing and maintaining a state-of-the-art wireless data network is totally different to that of a wireline network that has historically been advantaged by competition protection and external funding.

A comparison of our Broadband Standard prepaid / Top Up / bolt-on pricing with that of ADSL (MWEB ISP pricing) to illustrate that our data pricing is competitive with that of ADSL. This pricing also does not quantify the various benefits of our offering wrt to mobility, flexibility and coverage.

First you said people should not compare fixed line to mobile, now you are saying it's comparable. ;)

If you toss out MWeb's ridiculously expensive data bundles and replace it with something like Afri-host at R29/G (who make use of Seacom as it was intended for and not just redundancy) then your table suddenly starts to not look so favourable anymore.

Let's take the 4mb line option:
Size | Vodacom | Telkom | R/mb
1GB R289 R573 0.28 / 0.56
3GB R589 R602 0.19 / 0.20
5GB R989 R689 0.19 / 0.13
10GB R1989 R834 0.19 / 0.08

Again the figures show that if you are a low end user up to about 3GB then 3G is cheaper. If you intend to use more than 3GB a month then 3G is not for you.

So im assuming that these tariffs are set in stone for 2010?
Or until Telkom mobile officially launch their new pricing?
...Knock knock.
...Who's there?
...Consumer
...Consumer who?

what is flexibility V3G? the option to change between broad band standard and the highly over-expensive broadband "advanced" ?

or maybe it's the choice between in-bundle and the ball breaking out-of bundle prices?

Rep, one would argue that there are less costs in wireless networks plus you are using a lot of your existing cellular infrastructure. But that's another conversation.

We are not asking to drop your prices to R29 per gig like Afrihost, but at least drop the 19c per MB for large bundles of 3GB and more. Vodacom will get more revenue out of me that way and the only thing different is that Vodacom will make more use out of Seacom. You will not have to upgrade your infrastructure as speeds remain the same.

We know that you are not responsible for the pricing, but please pass this argument on to the relevant people.

I second that, I do not think anyone is expecting the R29/gig prices,but make all packages more affordable.

It's only wireless from your device to the tower. From the tower it's either Telkom diginet or Fibre that carries your data/call.

I think most people could live with that. If there was incentive to buy bigger bundles people might, but currently after 2GB it all works out to the same R/mb ratio.

How to save R11?

5GB : R989
but
2GB + 3GB =
R978

10GB: R 1,989.00
but
5GB + 5GB = R1978

Erm...low end users wouldn't use a 4mbps line so ADSL still wins for 3GB or less.
ADSL 384kbps
1GB = R151+R29 = R180
3GB = R151+R87 = R238

Wow...the 3GB ADSL package is even a lot cheaper than the Vodacom 1GB package.

Oh and I forgot to add: 3G is just plain dangerous. For instance in December my 1GB package bill came to R788 for going about 300MB over. Why? I forgot to disconnect before starting up Dragon Age one day and a 400MB DLC automatically downloaded without me knowing....while playing the game I suddenly got a pop-up message: "DLC download complete". Then I knew I was screwed for another R400 bucks for just for forgetting to disconnect....lol...the one DLC cost me more than the game...

In order to compare speed, bundle size and price on the most even of terms, you need to use the 4mb line offering from Telkom. Besides that I can see a number of benefits in having a faster line even if you are a low usage person (think faster surfing, streaming, stocks etc.).

You conveniently forgot about the line rental which is mandatory, so your 384k comparison looks more like:
1GB = R151+R29+R131 = R311 (R289 Vodacom)
3GB = R151+R87+R131 = R369 (R589 Vodacom)

If you are unable to manage going OOB then you should either go pre-paid/top-up or consider one for the advanced bundles where OOB = IB.

Going prepaid will help maintain losses...but will not stop people from sometimes wasting money unnecessarily. For instance if I just bought a 1GB prepaid bundle for R289 and a small slip up like forgetting to disconnect can still eat up the data.

The browsing difference between 384kbps and 4mbps will only be noticible on high bandwidth sites, video/music streaming etc which will eat through small caps like a hot knife through butter.

For people who already have a phone line, ADSL has become a clear choice due to the price drops in the last 4 months or so. 3G prices haven't changed for at least 2 years, maybe longer.

Not really. For general browsing my 384kbps ADSL feels a lot faster than my 3G connection ever did. It is more responsive, more robust. It is only on large file downloads and videos that 3G is faster than 384kbps ADSL.

A lot of people already have a land line. So for them the comparison is valid.

Bottom line, if you do not have to be mobile, ADSL is a better solution. It is much more reliable. Being a lot cheaper is just a bonus.

over 6000 thread views and Vodacom is still not worried - no price changes in 2 years!

Is Vodacom more expensive than iBurst? because a lot of my friends download over 30 Gigs a month from them!

Just like it would on ADSL

Even with normal browsing I can notice the difference between 384k and 4mb. On 2GB I get a fair amount of YouTube and some smallish downloads done. Yes I could use a lot more, but you can still do quite a bit with it.

3G speeds (as with all things wireless) is all about location. I get very good browsing and download speeds where I am and tend to fine myself roaming to so it works well for me. I have often seen speeds past 300kB/s when using a threaded download manager. Unless I needed more that 2GB of data in a month I would not trade my HSDPA for a 384k Telkom line.

For purposes of a fair comparison the total costs need to be included, yes if you have a Telkom line already you can ignore the cost, just pointing out that people keep looking at GB vs. GB price and forgetting line rental and ADSL service.

Vodacom really need to look at how they can use their Seacom link to increase caps (not just for redundancy) and they need to get a sliding scale in place for bigger bundles.
