Anyone looking for a fibre provider? Stuck between Cool Ideas and VOX? Use real-debrid seedbox? This might help you with your final decision...
The peering in Cape Town has more than enough capacity as things stand. You need to understand that most of the content providers are only in Johannesburg. So having a 10G port when you are only using 200Mbps on the local exchange wouldn't make any difference.Ranger_JoJo had question a couple of days ago regarding user experience on CISP in Cape Town. I'm in the same boat as him/her, and if the peering stats are correct I do find it quite concerning that Cape Town is lagging so far behind in capacity.
Ranger_JoJo Question
Morning all,
Vumatel is currently installing in my suburb (Cape Town) and I'm looking at ISP options to move off Telkom ADSL + VOX isp.
Will most likely be going with a 100Mbps/100Mbps line from Vumatel; but got stuck on ISP to go with.
Compared staying with VOX vs moving to Cool Ideas. Trying to get a feel for both ISPs network in good old "Slaap Stad" and looks like Cool Ideas is heavily biased towards deploying up north? Any on hear with experience of both ISP from Cape Town; latency and speeds to London would be important consideration. As see complaints against both for bad international connectivity, depending on who you ask.
Wondering if it comes down to where you are at with Cool Ideas.
See this for them vs good old Telkom

Any Cape Town based war-stories/advise for either ISP?
Thanks

Vuma aerial or trenched? If trenched you can activate right away if you have a routerSo my Vumatel installation was live when I got home tonight, so I signed up with Cool Ideas 20/20. Can't wait to be activated!
Vuma aerial or trenched? If trenched you can activate right away if you have a router![]()
Trenched and I have a router. My order number with Vumatel is Order number: O000000051478. I filled in the application at www.cisp.co.za/application too, my reference is Ticket ID: COOL-20171003-41734. Am I missing something?
Did you plug in your router, then your PC, navigate to shop.vumatel.co.za (the only address that will work) then create an account, sign in and select your package from the All Packages area ? Once you do that, within a few minutes, you will be live. Note that Vumatel use DHCP and will lock the line to your MAC address.
HTH
Yes, I did that. I can however only access the Vumatel page and it shows my package selection on my account page.
Thank you, I will try that. That's odd, the above is all I did and within about 15 mins it started working. Not sure if I had to reboot my router, that might be worth a try.
Thank you, I will try that.
Yeah can take a few minutes sometimes, PM me your object number otherwise.
